Diamond Cut?

I just bought 5 1967 Topps Ernie Banks cards and was wondering how the slight diamond cut would affect these cards' grade. They seem like no-brainer PSA8s to me, but will the diamond cut knock these down to 5s or 6s?

I've seen PSA 10s with a diamond cut.

Do you think these could have already been sent into PSA and they didn't grade them?

I have a pixel ruler that's in the form of a "T-square" - and this card is presenting quite an illusion - those corners are actually square.

So the card "isn't" diamond cut but actually a severe "Tilt" IMO. If it's diamond cut? Very, very little and wouldn't bother PSA IMO - but the tilt is gonna cost on centering.

I've seen in the past where people have used the term "diamond cut" when it's actually a "tilt."

Here's a true diamond cut - the card is NOT square but actually rhomboid shaped:

I brought this up for clarity and not to pontificate on definitions. image

  • As a newb, I have wondered if there was a difference between the two and now I know.

So perhaps I've not seen diamond cut PSA 10s but 10s with a tilt?

It would be tough to fit a diamond cut card into a slab. I have also seen "tilted" cards in PSA 9 and 10.

Awesome explanation that people have difficulty with.

  • Wasn't there a 10 schmidt or munson or something that just sold for 5 grand that was tilted?

Yeah it was a 1974 Schmidt, his second year card, but his first real individual card since his 1973 rookie card had two other players on it. The tilt on that card was slight and probably didn't affect centering enough to knock it down to a 9. The fish eyes on it were problematic, though, and a lot of people thought it was a poor example of a gem mint 10.

I just read the thread, and was going to bring up the Schmidt. Given the seller, wouldn't he/she have sent these to PSA if they thought 'em worthy? I don't know much about vintage, but I see a lot of you guys talking about PWC, so that's why I ask.

I see a bunch of 70/30 cards when the tilt is measured.

EDIT: The great thing is you can sub one of those and get a fairly good idea what all 5 will grade as.

I'm thinking about marketing a new rhomboid line of top loader and penny sleeve for diamond cuts.

Reminds me of the comedian who asked "why are hemorrhoids called hemorrhoids and astroids called astroids, wouldn't it make more sense if was the other way around? Of course, then you wouldn't be a proctologist, you'd be an astronaut."
