The two people that are most interested in Japanese coins in this forum, haven't yet posted a word.

Roy and Cathy (satootoko and Stork) must be very busy, or they have abandonned us. image

And what am I? Chopped liver?

Hello...not abandoned, just (very) sporadically lurking! I've been super busy and only just in the last few weeks have been even thinking about coins much. (I realized the next Tokyo coin show is in April, so I need to warm up).

It's always fun to look at the Japanese NEWPs people get image

No sir, not chopped or whole liver! But your vast academic knowledge goes beyond Japan,
and covers other exotic places such as Indochina, or Vietnam, Korea, China, Taiwan, and all these Asian countries whose coins are unreadable. image

Nice to hear from you Cathy. What a timing!

  • It's great to know there are some experts in Japanese and other Asian coinage here - I am a complete novice. My objective for my Japanese coin collecting is to put together a certified low-to-mid grade mint state pre-1946 type set. Say MS-60 to 65. Eye appealing (to me) coins. Thanks to the Finance Ministry, I have one of the gold issues (10 Yen 1903 NGC MS65) - which is sort of what got me interested in doing the set.

Not too sure what I am going to do about the pre-Meiji coins. The only one I have of those is a 10 Mon in ICG F12, and I think it is a cool looking coin.

You know, Stork too is building a Japanese type set, and she also has an exceedingly rare Whitman or Dansco album to house it!

Are you talking about something like this coin? (Different date, 1908, and different grading service, but same grade and hoard)

  • Great coin!

My 10 yen is in a regular NGC MS65 holder but is supposedly from the Ministry of Finance hoard.

I am a bit paranoid about the possibility of damage to coins, so I keep them in slabs. I enjoy the impact of an album display, so I sort of split the difference and use the Lighthouse slab pages (as well as their binders and slipcases). Having said that, I am very glad there are collectors who are keeping the Whitman and Dansco tradition alive!

Even though my condition goals for my Japanese type set are rather modest, I can already begin to enjoy the way the coins look displayed together.

    Where's the dragon? image

The dragon 50 sen is upto 1905 (Meiji 38). This is the Rising Sun 50 sen.
Similar design changes occurred to all Japanese denominations around that period, from half sen to one yen.

Stork didn't give me that JNDA for nothing. image

  • Here are some too-small pictures of the only 'dragon' Meiji 50 sen I have at the moment. 1898 PCGS MS62.

The JNDA! That brings back memories. My best friend in high school was a Japanese boy, and he used the JNDA to guide his collection. I should see if I can locate a recent copy. Japanese Numismatic Dealers Association, isn't it?

That's right. Mine is a 2007, because these folks often give away their old ones when they renew them and I got lucky.

Another nice coin. 1898 would be Meiji 31, and I see two different types of dragon 50 sens that year, but I'm not the one to tell you which one is yours. I'll only tell you that JNDA values one twice as much as the other in any condition. Total mintage of both types is 22,797,041 and your coin would be worth between 24 and 50000 yen in 2007,according to what type it is. Or twice as much accordingly in MS65. I love that design.

  • Though I know nothing about Japanese coinage, I've always been a fan of their designs. This one is no exception. LOVELY, in a word!
Lurker since '02. Got the seven year itch!

  • Some more 'dragon' coins I have in the type set, one of which is beginning to bother me:

    1905 10 Sen NGC MS66

    1912 1 Yen ANACS MS63

1914 1 Yen ANACS MS62 (this is the coin that bothers me because of the rim nick)

  • If it really bothers you, I would be happy to take it off your hands.image

  • New arrival. 1899 5 Sen NGC MS62. A drab little coin, but I like it.
