My newest custom: 1947 Sports Illustrated Cover

I saw some cool old S.I.'s on Pawn Stars the other day (somebody else has a thread going about this, and it is very interesting) And it made me wonder why S.I. had never put Jackie Robinson on a cover until 1997 for the 50th anniversary of his debut. I know they did not start to publish until 1954, well into Robinson's career and near the end of it, but they had 3 or 4 different covers in 1955 showing Dodgers, but not Jackie.

Anyway, made me want to make a cover for his debut in 1947.

  • I don't want to make "false" assumptions here so select people don't get on my case, but many civil rights acts weren't even enacted until mid-late 60's, and people were still somewhat uncomfortable with that IMO.

Big one was 64, but still many signed through the 70's, 80's and early 90's.

I would probably say "Negro League Star" instead of "Negro Star" - I think it's being politically correct for modern time..and yet I don't think it would look out of place on a retro cover.

That is a great suggestion! I had a hard time coming up with something that would be both realistic to the period and politically correct today.

    Thanks! Made the change!
