Thanks for the kind words. I really thought the Ozzie might have a chance at a 10. It is one of the nicest centered ones I have seen in a long time. Once I get it back I will provide a scan.

    Adam,

I'm not really excited about the Henderson. I honestly thought there was a really good chance at a 9. I have two others to send in on my next submission and once I look at the 8, I might think about a review of that card. I am most disappointed in the '71 Ryan and and '72 Clemente. I never expected the a PSA 4 and 6 on those two cards.

    Jeff,

The Ripken is from one of my raw sets, that I thought had a chance at a 10. There are several in the DS submission, that once I get the cards back I might consider resubmitting. I about fell on the floor when I saw the four PSA 4s. There is no way that Gwynn and Johnson are 4s.

Not really a stash. I have three raw complete sets and a couple of hundred raw extras and am currently number 7 on the registry. I have been tempted many times to open my wax box and hunt for the Jones; but so far have not given into the temptation.

    Bobby,

Thanks for the kind words. I will be posting the Ozzie a little later to get opinions on whether it would ever have a chance at a PSA 10 on a resubmit.

Is it just me, or does the bottom border on the Ozzie look strange?
There's some spacing only on the left side and then the border gets
larger going to the right. Illusion?

It's the nicest Ozzie I've ever seen, but it's still slightly crooked. The let end of the banner is closer to the bottom edge than the right end. A 10 seems very unlikely. It's still amazing though. Thanks for posting the scans!

Awesome! thank you for taking the time to fill me in.

as for the Ozzie, it may just be the scan, but is there a slight tilt?

  • It seems to be an optical illusion. I have a feeling it could have a bit of a curl. It appears to have a slight tilt (maybe one degree at most), but the rotation of the tilt is clockwise. For the lower left border to be reduced the way it is, the tilt would have to be counterclockwise. In any case, it's a very solid 9. Probably won't make 10 because of T/B centering all the way on the left side of the card. I get a top border height of 14 pixels and a bottom border height of only 8.

LOL, I don't think that's it. My avatar pic looks like a probable Shea pic as well. I think it's more to do with it being Von Hayes. He was almost like the Joe Pepitone of the 1980s - just good enough to be noticed, but not really good enough to be admired. In Pepitone's case, it was his own fault. Both played first base and outfield, both were left-handed hitters. And looking at the numbers, Hayes was clearly superior to Pepitone, but still probably never quite reached his full potential. It's almost as if I've been trying to really like the guy for 20 years, but I can't quite do it.

On a different note, I also love the #300 Kirby Puckett card. He looks so happy there with his big smile and his hat not pressed down securely on his head. It's a shame the centering is a bit off. The corners look razor. It would easily be 10(OC) if they offered qualifiers on 10s. El Presidente killed Kirby. image

That Smith card is among the very best I've seen...and to pull that card from a cello pack, which are usually wrapped pretty tight, is just amazing!

Hmmm ... Pepitone made the All-Star team THREE times and was a Gold Glove winner THREE times. And Mr. Hayes?

All-star selections and gold gloves? Really?

Did Pepitone ever have an on-base percentage over .300? Did he ever play a game after getting a full night's rest? Maybe if he'd used a regular wooden bat instead of a hair dryer when he went up to the plate, he would have been a better ballplayer.

Pepitone only hit 20 doubles once, and that year he hit 21. Hayes once hit 46 in a season. Pepitone hit a few more homers, but Hayes was clearly the superior player, BY FAR.

    On the Ozzie:

This card (and many others from the '79T set) has a bottom banner that runs slightly up from left to right - it's how the card was produced, and it is neither an illusion nor a tilt.
Since the banner does not run parallel to the bottom edge, it often detracts from the eye appeal. But since it's on every Ozzie, I believe graders take this into account and do not discount the card's grade because of it.
I believe that this flaw, while it won't keep it from a 9, is one of the reasons there are so few 10s.

    Really nice card BTW
  • DialjDialj Posts: 1,636 ✭✭
    Hammered,

I noticed the same thing about the banner. Hard to believe there have only been 4 10s on the Ozzie. The R/L margins are also killers on the set.
