Sniffer Question

Does PCGS use the Sniffer on all coins that they grade or just ones with Secure Plus? My only concern is with Coin Dip or Ezest. I've used it before to clean a few coins before they started to tone. I did rinse them off with water afterwards. From their video, they rubbed quite a bit of grease on the coin for use in the Sniffer. What if there's still a speck of Ezest left, will it find it? It's pretty much accepted that people use dipping on many of their coins to remove toning or to clean up the coin. I just don't want to send some coins off to be graded and have them denied because they were dipped at one point 10 years ago.

  • Not much chance that any kind of aromatic compound that is rinsed away is going to be detected. I've used the state of the art gas detection equipment to enter confined spaces and aircraft fuel cells for the DOD and solvents dissipate. That being said I'm not sure what the Ezest is that you mention.

But if it is a liquid solvent it is non detectable by gas detection equipment after it evaporates in a ventilated area and especially after rinsed away.

Only coins submitted under Secure Plus, coins suspected of being screwed with, and some randomly sampled coins are put through the Sniffer.

If your coin is under $5000, I would say your chances of getting sniffed are near zero but not zero either.
  • Yeah, that's what I'm hearing, and I asked the same question, basically, in two different threads. You're OK; dip away! image
