You be the Mint - How Many Pucks do you mint for 2011? When do you release them?

You've either witnessed or avoided the insanity.

Now it's 2011 and new pucks are to be issued.

You surely don't want to go through that again.

How many do you make and when do you release them?

I think 100,000 of each design to start and release the first one ASAP with no fixed mintage limit. Once they see what demand is like, they can take them off sale to mint others.

Thank you for the offer to become Director of the Mint. What's my salary and when do I start?image

Let me have a chat with my set-up crew to see how long a run takes to set up. Since this is going to be a long program and since the price of silver is going up, I don't have a problem with having extra blanks on-hand. I figure we'd better get started in production, since these things don't come off the press all that fast. I'll start with a run of 40,000 each and start offering them in April. Maybe I'll even change my mind on the "collector issues" and re-use those blanks more productively.

I hear about 85,000 UHR Double Eagles whispering in my ear, "don't do it".

    I knew it would happen.

I mint the crap out of them and milk collectors for every available penny by charging 50% over melt. Hey that's what's been happening the past few years with all their Silver products! I am US Mint management materialimage
  • Given the fact that they make a lot of money on them, you make as many as you can sell.

Start out with 50000 but don't give any to the AP's, they don't deserve them.
  • Bullion version: Considering the demand for the ASEs, I'd mint to demand, expecting the demand to be considerably greater than 500K (100K each design).

Numismatic version: I would up this to 38K for each design. 27K is just too low.

  • One thing is for certain: I wouldn't want to see the circus again. If I ran the Mint, I'd be sending out auditors. Certain folks might be disqualified from the 2011 ATB program.

MsM, I agree, 100k of each design. Start there and see what happens. Make more as needed.

40k of each numismatic. Not sure.

Have the 2011s out in the first quarter of the year. Numismatics out by summer, sold as singles and as sets. World-class presentation cases. Sell presentation-case options compatible with PCGS/NGC slabs.
