eBay Bidder to Block? -- UPDATED

BUYER REVISED FEEDBACK Got back from lunch meeting and the buyer responded to my eBay request to revise feedback. So I guess all is well that ends well???

High bidder ID:
tonywhitaker12 ( 9 ) 100%

So this newbie gives me my first neg today:

Negative Feedback

I sold him this $10 Fleer Update Emmitt Smith rookie (Auction Link).

He emailed me a scan of the card showing a crack in the back of the case along with this email:

Well I knew you didn't sell it that way to me and it's not too big of a deal since it's just a ten dollar card and it's hard to see from the front. I just got back into this so it's all new to me but one guy send his card with a card board slab behind it which may help with USPS damaging it. I collect Emmitt's maybe I could buy a good one and you could give me a little break on it?

I explain that I don't have any replacements but that I can offer a refund or other Cowboy cards. So I let him keep the card and send him an Emmitt Smith Pro Set rookie and a Tony Romo serial numbered Gold Topps card for free. I acknowledge that it took me a week to mail out the replacement cards but he negs me with out contact. (mind you he sent me about 4 emails the day we worked out the replacement).

Anyway what really pisses me off is that I have 3 high dollar cards ending in the next two days and potential bidders will get to see a negative as my latest feedback!

If I was buying from you, in all honesty, seeing a negative about a cracked case from a 9 fb buyer wouldn't turn me away.

So what was the deal on the cracked case? Happened in transit?

Yep, I ship all my graded cards in a graded card sleeve in a bubble envelope. I double wrap on the cards $20 and up. I wish he would have just took me up on my refund offer. Not worth dealing with this mess over $10 in a hobby!

I always do bubble plus two sheets of cardboard. It doesn't affect the thickness enough to impact postage or machine safety that I've found.

I am hoping that will be the case for the 3 big items that I am selling. Hopefully most buyers will look at it the same way as you.

Funny thing about eBay. I listed a mini-helmet that sold for $9 and the guy did not pay for it. I was able to file a non payment dispute and get my FV fees back but apparently I can't leave a negative for non-payment to a buyer?

Thanks for the reply. Just as a general statement, if you are putting graded cards in a bubble envelope (especially the smaller ones) with no other packaging, you will be opening yourself up to this issue in the future. I've been receiving a rash of cards packaged this way lately with obvious roller marks from machine cancellations, in some cases holes in the envelope itself. So far, the holders are surving, but it's only a matter of time.

Yup - no way to warn others that the d-bag likes to bid and not pay. He gets to move on with his perfect feedback.

Going through 1 myself right now. Not only did this sack of feces make an offer that was accepted, he then proceeded to buy and pay for more stuff from other sellers each and every day over the last 11 days. I've watched his feedback climb every day. Completely ignoring the $45 card he bought from me. 2 days after he started wasting my time, he even bought and paid for a $275 roll of Kennedy half dollars along with several things ranging from $3 to $60.

I get to close my case and relist the card in a few hours. I'll post his name after I close the case.

I think I will start doubling on all cards from now on. I actually just bought a 25 count box of larger size bubble envelopes from Office Max instead of the small single card sized envelopes. Part of the problem is that the smaller envelopes don't have the room for the extra wrapping.

Lesson learned going forward to avoid these issues. Good thing is I already sold most of my low priced cards!

I just reuse bigger bubble mailers I receive stuff in :]
  • I make sure all my shipped packages are stamped "Fragile." Not that that necessarily means anything, but hopefully a little extra care is taken.

I use 2 mailers for all my cards (slab gets wrapped tight in the first mailer, then goes into the second), even if they sell for a buck. I charge $2.85 for shipping, and doing what I can to keep it safe is the least I can do.

Buy some cardboard sheets and cut them up to protect cards in shipment. It doesn't really add much weight, and it only takes a couple seconds.

    Good for you.

Cardboard boxes are pretty easy to find for free.

I use two or more pieces on each side of the item, before
it goes into the bubble mailer.

I see the buyer "revised" his FB to a Pos.

All is well that ends well; sort of.

And if you're a cheapskate like me, you can simply cut up cardboard boxes to the right dimensions. Buying in precut sizes does look tempting though. It would sure save some time and hassle of self cutting.

I have been cutting up recycled boxes and packing material too, but I am running out of stuff and looking for a solution. Depending on what they charge for shipping, this seems like a decent solution.

I had a guy use a fresh Pizza Hut box once and the oil/grease seeped into the toploader making the card worthless to grade as it would have gotten a qualifier.

You sure that was pizza grease?
