1973 Andre the Giant card
i've never seen this card before. I always thought the 82 card was his rookie. Didn't know he had one 9 years earlier. i didn't bid on this because it looked like there were 2 huge creases in it and i'm terrible at cutting "hand cut" cards.. has anyone ever seen this before?

Here are a few pics of the 1978 mag. I sold this one on EBAY for $175 and still have two left.

There's a clip of him in a french martial arts movie, in 1967? He was thin and completely different than his wrestling days.
<< <i>I've been watching a lot of Andre and old 80's WWF matches on youtube. He had some great cage matches against Big John Studd (even jumping off the top rope, in 1984 when he was still athletic).

This is a fun video of Andre the Giant. It's a compilation of Andre being slammed throughout his career. Some truly impressive ones later in the 1980s:

Great collection of slams. I just saw the Stan Hensen one the other night (1981, noted for how high he got him). The Hogan slam at WM III was legendary, almost mythical.
Here is Wrestlemania III in the cards.
There are so many great matches you can find on Youtube. Andre was just an awesome presence and the crowd always got up for his matches. Some of those chops would break an average sized guys chest.
The match at Wrestlemania III was magical. The one Andre highlight that is crazy is the lead up to Wrestlemania IV when he chokes Hogan out in the ring. He has Hogan a 300 pound man by the throught and squeezes the life out of him. Hogan claims in his DVD's he was always nervous working with Andre and I don't blame him with this angle.
There's some videos of it on youtube and dailymotion, but the quality isnt very good. I wonder if its on dvd. I havent kept up with the dvd releases of wrestling matches in the 80's and early 90's. Do most of them still have the original entrance music, promos, unedited sounds, etc? I hope they haven't butchered them.
Wrestling was magical in the 80's. It seems like every little gimmick worked....junkyard dog, the british bulldogs matilda, damien (jake the snake)....down to the different personalities....iron sheik, hillbilly jim, ricky steamboat, don muraco, etc. It seems like they all "fit" into the WWF wrestling universe. I can't get over the talent of just the tag teams...hart foundation, killer bees, demolition, british bulldogs. An unbelievable amount of talent.

TOTALLY remember that!! That was when I first got into wrestling, what a great angle. They were able to milk Hulk vs. Andre for almost two years, created two pay-per-views solely based off the heat of that fueled (SummerSlam & Survivor Series).
My how the times have changed. Now there's so many pay-per-views that they switch guys back & forth so much it's hard for even a regular viewer to keep track of who's "good" and who's "bad". There's so many titles that they just don't mean anything anymore. Remember when Andre finally beat Hogan for the title with the double ref trick? There hasn't been a title change in the last twenty years with that kind of impact. Sting beating Hogan had a shot to be a title switch of that magnitude but Hogan's ego & Eric Bichoff effed that up.
I still watch form time to time, I like Miz, CM Punk & a few others but it just doesn't have the same magic as it did in the mid 80's thru early 90's.

Don't believe a word Hogan says. He's said all kinds of nonsense about Wrestlemania III over the years - claiming Andre weighed 800 lbs, and on and on and on. He claims to have been afraid Andre would go against the script despite their having worked together dozens of times over the years. There was never any danger of Andre going off-script whatsoever. On wrestling message boards, the stuff Hogan has said over the years has become a running joke because it's all just so laughably untrue.

In general, the original music has been removed or changed. For example, for Hulk Hogan's title win over Iron Sheik, they've replaced his "Eye of the Tiger" entrance theme with "Real American", etc. However, you can find bootleg DVDs of pretty much any wrestling you'd ever want to see - and a lot you had no idea existed. For example, did you know that Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair faced each other in the WWF? And not just the two times at Madison Square Garden that have been released on DVD or the WWF's 24/7 cable channel? There's footage of several other of their matches available. Or the match where Dynamite Kid blew out his back that was never aired on TV. And so on.

Don't some of the official WWF dvd's blur out the WWF logo in the arena? I thought I read that somewhere.
I'm a sure a complete bootleg Saturday nights main event collection is out there. Although I wish they'd do the originals, unedited and complete. Thats probably one of my top sports dvd wishes (esp from the 80's). I'd like to see the continuity with the promos, opening music (animotion's obsession and the wwf created theme), and see how the whole thing evolves.
I remember how rare it was to see Hogan on free tv in the 80's. SNME was HUGE. It was basically a free mini ppv.
I agree about the belts and ppv's. I liked it when there were just four ppv's.....wrestlemania, summer slam, survivor series, royal rumble. And 3 belts. A few other gimmicks...but mostly it was wrestling.
<< <i>Don't some of the official WWF dvd's blur out the WWF logo in the arena? I thought I read that somewhere. >>
Yes. Footage from the era when the WWF used their scratch logo (late 90s) now has the logos blurred. The turnbuckles, the arena banners, etc. Depending on the match, it can be incredibly distracting.
Some DVDs from that era were released prior to the blurring being required (the WWF wrestling guys lost a lawsuit brought by the WWF wildlife guys over the WWF name) and they are now quite valuable. Wrestlemania 14 & 15, for example.

Oh, it absolutely exists. I don't have it myself but I know lots of people that do. I have about 10 of the SNMEs on DVD, some I taped myself back in 1985/86, and some from their rebroadcast on the WWF's 24/7 channel.
I've been very active in the wrestling trading scene online for over 15 years and the stuff that's appeared is just amazing. Matches I read about as a kid but thought I'd never see - Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat at the Meadowlands in 1984, for example, or Ric Flair vs Rick Martel from Japan in 1985 (NWA vs AWA world title!). Bruno's WWWF world title loss to Ivan Koloff. Full seasons of TV shows from 1984 onward. House show footage that was never shown on TV from groups like Mid-South or Memphis. NWA world title changes from the 1920s.
What's out there is truly amazing if you're into wrestling at all.

<< <i>i remember my dad telling me around the time of wm3 that hogan and andre had a match before hogan was really popular and still a bad guy. I was 7 at the time and didnt think such a matc was possible since it was never brought up by mean gene and company. I forgot all about it but finally saw it on youtube. I never heard they had steel cage match too. How many times did they face each other prior to wm3? >>
DOZENS.
Just in 1980 in the WWF, there were:
1/5/80
3/28/80
3/29/80
3/31/80
4/5/80
7/25/80
7/26/80
8/2/80 (Superdome)
8/9/80 (Shea Stadium)
8/15/80
8/16/80
8/20/80
8/25/80
8/28/80 (tag match)
8/30/80
9/13/80
9/18/80
9/20/80
9/22/80 (Madison Square Garden)
10/4/80
12/27/80
12/28/80
12/30/80
That's just matches from the WWF and just for one year. Andre & Hogan wrestled each other in every major arena run by the WWF that year - MSG, multiple times at Boston Garden, once in Philadelphia, multiple times in Pittsburgh, the Cap Centre in DC, and so on. They previously wrestled in the 1970s in some of the smaller feds where Hogan was working and also wrestled several times in Japan.

I use to watch wrestling on saturdays at 12 pm, and sundays at 12. One of the shows was Superstars of wrestling. I forget the other one, it was just a bunch of jobber matches. Then at the end of the show, it was super star vs super star. It was a very contained little wrestling "world". Esp as a kid. They saved the big matches for ppv's. Anyone remember trying to split the channel on your cable box, trying to watch the ppv's for free? LOL. I remember pressing two buttons down at the same near the ppv channel. You'd get a wavy line, sometimes you'd hear what's going on. Haha.
Mean Gene, or Sean Mooney wouldn't tell you about all these house shows. As a kid, you accepted their view of wrestling, and what was going on. It's amazing whats popped up because of the internet.
-I never got into the NWA or regional wrestling (or japan) as a kid. I use to watch GLOW, UWF, and WWF. Most of the wants I would have aren't really Sting or Flair focused. Like Zeus' buildup. I remember he use to demolish a bunch of guys every week leading up to his big feud with Hogan. A complete collection of Superstars of Wrestling would be interesting (at least from 86-89 or 90).
<< <i>Don't believe a word Hogan says. >>
The Hulkster is an honest guy and I believe every word he says. Bet you think wrestling is fake and scripted, too...
<< <i>I use to watch wrestling on saturdays at 12 pm, and sundays at 12. One of the shows was Superstars of wrestling. I forget the other one, it was just a bunch of jobber matches. >>
Wrestling Challenge was the name of that show. Often the best part of the broadcast would be the back & forth banter between Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. I started watching in late '88, during the last months of Hogan's first title run. Used to watch the Cartoon "Hulk Hogan's Rock & Wrestling" as well.
Totaly remember staying up late to watch "Saturday Night's Main Event". You're right,it was like a mini pay-per-view. I lived in a very rural aera in PA that wasn't yet wired for cable, and even if it was it's not like I could talk my mom into forking over $$ to watch wrestling so for me (and I suspect many others) it was a godsend to be able to watch Hulk & the other superstarts wrestle important matches. I remember they used to air "WKRP in Cinncinati" right before the show would start at 11:30. Good times. Once I moved to Florida (and had cable) I remember watching the blurry scrambled channels during PPV's...this was how I found out Sting beat Luger for the WCW title & how I found out Flair won the WWF title at Royal Rumble '92. Wooooo!!
I've never understood the blurring of the "scratch" logo because the old school classic WF logo is never blurred, yet both have the same "W" "F" initials. Wonder why/how they made the distinction?
My parents subscribed to TV Guide. I remember when the TV Guide would arrive, I would pick it up and immediately turn to the Saturday Night Lineup, only to be usually disappointed to see Saturday Night Live listed. In the rare events that Saturday Night's Main Event was listed, it was like Christmas morning for me.
<< <i>I've never understood the blurring of the "scratch" logo because the old school classic WF logo is never blurred, yet both have the same "W" "F" initials. Wonder why/how they made the distinction? >>
It's not the logo itself, it's the time period during which they used the logo. Basically, they didn't have any rights to the "WWF" name during that time period but used it anyway. The real WWF sued, the wrestling company lost, and so now they have to go back and strike every "WWF" from their broadcasts from that period. They've also done it in other time periods though they sometimes leave "WWWF" (their original name, up til 1983) in when it's used.

Thanks for the info, never knew that. Yes, it can be VERY distracting when trying to watch matches from that era.
Here is my strongest Andre card. I am going to try and cross this one with my next sub. It will be tough and I would be thrilled if it happens.

This one is the stronger of the two in my mind. I have a nice batch of BGS cards I am going to try and cross them. I just picked up a very cool card, the super tuff Jimmy Valient in BGS 9.5. I have not had much success crossing BGS 9.5 to PSA 10 but this one looks very strong.
In case anyone reading this thread does not know, the Andre card is one if not the toughest card to find in high grade from the entire Wrestling All Stars series.

Yeah, it's a gimmicked photo, much like the famous one of Andre towering over Vince McMahon (Andre was standing on a box).

Wow very nice call on him being on a box. The interview is in a dark studio so no fans to blow the cover. In today's world there would be leaks on the internet instantly saying he was a on a box and it would kill the angle they were going after.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I was a kid in the mid to late 70's I remember Andre touring multiple cities similar to how music acts tour.
He came to Knoxville, my hometown, about once a year with the old Southeastern Championship Wrestling, and to the Carolinas in Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. I know it was very different in those days, but it seemed he had no affliation to any wrestling alliance.
Obviously, it was always a big deal when he came to town!
He certainly was a complex man and deserves to be remembered fondly, IMHO.

Bruiser Brody was the only other wrestler I am aware of to follow in those footsteps and then once so many of the promotions shut down this was no longer an option.
