I am guessing the toning may have come from portrait-down storage in a plush case. This type was only issued for two years, 1938 and 1940. In both of those years proofs were also issued. In the two and a half years I have owned the coin I have often wondered if it may be a proof or other specimen striking. Sort of a distant cousin to the George VI British West Africa and East Africa specimen strikings of the same era.
