Does anyone know of any coins shows in Germany in July?

Does anyone know of any coin shows in Germany (or nearby) in July? I'll be going there on a school trip (as a teacher) and will have a couple of weekends to myself, specifically July 9-10 and July 16-17. Would be my dream to attend a coin show there, or even an auction or something. If you know of any at any time in June or July, that would be good, may just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

If anyone has a recent Coin Trend magazine I think it has dates for shows in it, I however only have an old one that doesn't cover this year. If you know of a website that would be great too.

I'm also wondering, people who have been to Germany, do coin shops there have 'junk' boxes of German stuff? I collect mainly pre WWII small change (1pf - 1 Mark) and would love to sift through to find the dates/mintmarks I don't have. Any other good ideas?

Thanks,
Andrew

  • Just giving this a bump, think it was swamped with other posts when it first went up, is a bit quieter now. Anyone been to any coin shops in Germany and want to share the experience.
    Thanks,

I lived there for a few years and some of us have commented elsewhere here about the German and more broadly European shop-going experience. In many ways, they're not too different from shops in the US or, I imagine, Australia - it's kinda hit or miss. But some all too common and annoying habits there include pawing raw coins with oily fingers, PVC flips and cleaning. So, I guess, watch out. I have seen junk boxes at shows, but not at dealer's shops. As Preussen mentioned, the shows are usually later in the year - Stuttgart's big one is in September, though Ludwigsburg north of there had a nice monthly show when I was there.

A funny thing about Germany: stamps and postcards still seem to be more popular than coins there, and euro coins are more popular than the rest among most folks - at least when I left in 2004.

I'd check online for shops local to where you plan on going. If you know your itinerary, some of us might be able to help locate some stores.

One thing I'd strongly recommend, not necessarily for the numismatic experience, but just in general, is to find a good Saturday flea market (flohmarkt). I know in Stuttgart there were usually a handful of vendors with coins and notes there - and junkboxes of stuff back to the Kaiserreich image Odds are you won't find spectacular coins there, but a good flea market in Europe doesn't compare to the junk peddlers found at the same in the US! Usually plenty of neat books, postcards, antiques and such. Plus it's a nice way to get away from the touristy stuff, waste an hour or two and mingle with locals image

Ah, almost forgot... check for museums with a Münzkabinett also! I lived in Stuttgart for 3 years and never really paid attention to the museum in Altes Schloss until just before I left.. turns out they have on display a great selection from the old duke's collection and piles of coins from dug hoards! - The Berlin one has a decent website (that pic is really something!)
