best kt for a class ring

BBNBBN Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭
Just curious as to what is best for a class ring. I really want an 18k but afraid the thing would wear down easily. Would 14k be much better for a class ring? I do realize the premium markup but it would have more value than just gold. So 18k or 14k? Thanks

PS: Are there others that would just go with 10k since the value is the accomplishment recognition more than the jewelry?

    14

18 is soft and marks up quite a bit. Below 14 the gold is very yellow.

it was 20 years ago but I went with 14 for the reasons mentioned

you can fight with a 10kt and not worry about it, too. there are some jewelers here they'll know!
  • I motion for the 10 karat.

Your final point about the accomplishment is valid. I opted for 10kt, and only don it during football season.

If you were going to wear it every day, I would opt for 14 or 18 karat.

Thanks guys. It's Judson University in Elgin, IL. I'm going to be done next spring. Saving up the money now. I wouldn't wear it everyday. Maybe only on the job in a business setting and others times dressed up. I definitely don't want to put it through daily abuse and I want it to have a nice "gold" color. I love the looks of 18k but afraid of the soft metal getting damaged too easily.

Back in 1986 I got a class ring that was some alloy of silver & palladium. At the time, I had never heard of palladium!

In college, got a nice 18K ring.

Wore both a few times, now sitting in safe deposit box, to be sent to the refinery by my heirs.

Probably should have invested the money elsewhere! image
