How can I help PSA/DNA authenticate an auto?

I would love to have my Frank Gotch autograph in a PSA/DNA slab. He died in the 1910s and very few of his autographs are out there. I do have some examples of his autographs and the founder for the Wrestling Museum in Waterloo Iowa verified the authenticity of my item. He also wrote three books on Frank Gotch and has some of his personal items in his collection. Is there any way to "help" them with authenticating an auto?

  • Have you contacted PSA/DNA to authenticate it and they won't accept it? If so, that's probably because they have no exemplars on file for Mr. Gotch. If they don't have any legitimate exemplars, then there's no way for them to authenticate it.

Since you know Frank Gotch, have you heard of George Bothner? He was a relative of mine.

If they dont have someone expert enough to authenticate it, they will just keep your fee and return the item without explanation. Nice payday.

How are you related to George Bothner? That is fantastic, he was known as a great scientific wrestler. There were no cards of him that I have ever found. Were there any postcards made of him?

Just sub it with a bunch of othewr wrestling autos that are authentic. If they dont know who the person is they will just slab it. I sent a marqis bragg card that i just scibbled on with a buch of other providence college cards and it came back authentic. I did basically to see what would happen and they failed the test

Remember it is their opinion you are buying. I had a Bill France come back as suspect. I can match it up to any Bill France autograph in the NASCAR Hall of Fame but someone over at PSA said it was suspect. Everything else I sent came back OK. So even if you have a letter saying it's authentic that will not guarantee PSA will say the same thing. So I would send it and see what happens.

What if you send in something you know is authentic but it comes back questionable? Is it worthwhile to send in again, or are you likely to be rejected again?

Yes, it will be rejected again cuz they are the "experts" and you are not. They will thank you for your re-donation though.
  • I wonder if a signer actually took the time to talk to an authenticator at a show and authenticated his own signature, if the authenticator would listen. I can just picture it now:

Athlete: Excuse me, I signed this autograph 20 years ago, and it looks a little different than my current signature, but it's authentic, and you rejected it for authentication.

Authenticator: Well it doesn't match your signature.

    Athlete: But I signed it.

    Authenticator: No you didn't.

Athlete: I remember signing it, and it looks like all the items I signed around that time.

Authenticator: No you didn't, because I said you didn't. It's a phony autograph.
  • I remember reading (I think on this board) where a guy sent in a bunch of obscure autographs and one of them was of some 80's no name minor leaguer that he signed himself with a random auto. It ended up coming back slabbed. Anyone else remember reading that story on here?
