Modern Type - Lets Decide Where the Major Action Will Be

Now that we have the final lists. I thinkimage. Can we decide on the major arena that we will all play in? The old 20th century set was fun in part because of all the comment and competition. Everyone was there regardless of whatever else they did.

With 12 sets now, I hope we don't get all dispersed.

I would suggest we all play in the 20th Century mint state and proof with variations. This seems to be the most like what we had before. And yes, I'll even look to buy the d*amm modern SMS piece (how did that get in there?). Of course I'm sure everyone will be in other as well, but what do you think about making this one the core arena?

Cheers

Greg S.

I'm pretty much going to stick with the full 1900- 1999 Type and the Modern (1950- current) sets. Oh, I guess my full 1793- 1999 set still counts too. No gold for me.

-Are you glad PCGS decided to stick with the Commemoratives? I am after thinking about it (I voted 'no' the first go around).

I keep looking at the sets, but I just can't see myself getting involved in the "combined" sets. According to the charts, there are no penalities for non-CAM and non-DCAM coins in the mixed sets. Since most slots have a one to two point disadvantage built in for a MS collector, I will stick with the Circulation Strike only sets, Major Types, Complete Types, Gold Type, and Gold Design. Don't plan to revive my 1959-present set at this time.

Initially, I'll be in the 20th Century mint state and proof with variations, although I'm thinking of going with the same set without the proofs. I like the idea of an all-MS set better than a mixed MS/proof set, but I have some of the proofs now. When I replace them with MS pieces, I 'll probably switch to the all MS set. They both contain a lot of modern coins that I don't care to have slabbed, but they truly are distinct types and/or varieties.

    Jim,

Would definitely welcome you over on the MS only side as well. I think that there are a lot of guys who will be moving that direction from the current list of about 50 sets. Maybe not as many as the the mixed sets, but we should have a pretty good showing.

  • I'm going with the follwing 3 sets: I don't like proofs and I can't compete in the combined set with proofs

20th Century Type Set - Major Types, No Gold - Circulation Strikes (1900-1999)
20th Century Type Set with Type Variations - Circulation Strikes (1900-1999)
Modern Type Set - Circulation Strikes (1950-Present)
  • My original plan was to go ahead and get the state quarter Silver PR to complete the "original" set. But now that the With Varities has been deemed the original, I will go ahead and get the Accented Hair Kennedy and finish this set off as well. Will keep the set active until all of the MS coins are MS-65 or better. I think that my early material will be able to keep the set competitive enough to make it worth my while to find an Accented Hair.

I'm getting these 20th Century sets mixed up there are so many of them...

    CS
    CS with Varieties
    PR
    PR & CS (Valid??)
PR & CS with Varieities (On-Line Now)

I have decided to use the PR & CS with Varieties as a playground. I don't expect to be competitive, and have been looking for a home for some of my nice SMS coins, so I'll put them here.

I am going to play with the current type set pr and CS, but I am looking forward to the CS type sets no gold. This is a little more of what I like to collect (CS type) and this was what I was working on before I joined. I asked BJ to add me to the two 1900-1999 sets(CS only), a week ago. I decided these were best for my personal direction. I do think the new sets will put a breath of fresh air back into the registry. Have a great weekend all image

  • I'll be sticking to Mint State only... which is what I wanted from the very begining.

For now, I'm no longer a player in anything after 1964. I have three sets. The big 1792-1964, and two subsets of that: the Copper/Nickel/Silver and the 20th Century Gold (8-piece), which I have completed. The Big Set and the C/N/S will keep me busy for quite some time, but I will once again be playing with the earlier coins I love. Which is not to say I didn't enjoy the old 1900-present set and its players. Had I not done that set for a year and completed it just before everything changed, I would not have had as good a foundation for the bigger sets I'll be working on in the future. I also got a head start on the gold that way, and probably got higher-quality moderns, since the 1900-present was my only focus for quite some time, and I was strict with myself about staying in the MS grades, even for the tough coins. That focus will pay off in the long run, I hope. Now I can also play with some circulated stuff and maybe get some nice AU58 classic coins (though I still will try for MS and PR62+ where possible).

Everyone should play on the big 1792-1964 set, if we want a common ground for Typies. Even if you only have one coin. image
