Bought my 'Showpiece" Feuchtwanger Cent~~

You know when you collect a series from the past, you have the choice of whether to concentrate on circulated, or concentrate on MS...or just buy whatever grade you wish. And for the most part Ive not been too 'grade happy' with the Feuchtwangers...and Ive noticed that most collectors of these seem to collect in all grades.

But..if your set is mostly circulated, its nice to have at least ONE really nice high grade :;looker;:

You see quite a few of really nice feuchtwanger cents, ms67, 66...quite a few 65s are out there...and for the most part youll find these variety 6I...which is thought to have been struck closer to the civil war era, and exists in far greater numbers than any other variety.

But, Im a rarity fiend...I thrive on it, I lust for it....it feeds and fuels my collecting passions, so as far as high grade I knew it had to have rarity mixed in with it...and that mix was found. This one is a 2A,. which is the rarest obverse, an R5 with 31 to 75...and that is mirrored by the fact Heritage has only sold three 2A pieces in their history. One was an NGC MS63, the JJ Ford specimen which dosent hold a candle to this one in sheer eye appeal.

There are rarer varieties, they occur with the reverse differences, which are minute and only obvious to an expert with the series. The 2 obverse though has that crude, meanacing evil bird, looking ever so 'not quite right' in the look of the eagles head. I feel the reason for the rarity of this, and the 1 obverse, is Feuchtwanger was displeased with the results...and didnt like the look of the eagle. Just speculation...but there has to be a reason there are so few of these 1 and 2 varities.

And thinking about the 3D...the one that got away...and that botched bidding that cost me the die trial piece...I just love sitting targets. A nice coin, from a top flite dealer, at a very fair price. He said "A prize for the Specialist", Kagins had this beauty sitting there in the calm still waters of its marvelous website. Slowly I paddeled up, in my feuchtwanger hunting canoe....and blasted two big holes in it with my trusty Parker 10 guage hammerlock...

and now I bought my nicest Feuchtwanger Cent!

Ambro--that is a beauty...I may have seen 1 or 2 1A or 2As out there in higher grades, but I don't think I've seen one any nicer.

Thanks, Yes, I agree. I think Ive located a 1A in 'showpiece' grade....Ill be calling on that today.

The weakness on the high points of the eagle, very normal with these issues....

Of course it will take a bit of inspection to see what the luster remaining on this piece is, but from the look of it it would stand a good chance at an upgrade or a bean....of some color.

Just got an email from Lee Minschull with his latest list. In the highlights mentioned in the email there is an MS-65 Feuchtwanger. Didn't open it so I do not know what variety, etc.
