Sales tax on Coin Sales in NJ

Hi!
I just sold a coin on Ebay and want to be compliant.
The coin sold for over $1,000.00 is there sales tax on a coin if it was over $1,000.00 in NJ to a NJ resident, I do not wish to charge if I do not have to. I pay sales and use tax each qtr. And can you site the ruling that states yea or neigh for my records? Thanks! Larry

  • Hi Larry - I am in NJ, and collect sales tax on all retail sales in NJ. I cannot point to a ruling, but whatever sells in the state is taxable, unless it meets a specific exemption, of which there is none for coins.

I disagree. No tax is remitted to NJ unless you are in NJ or have a place of business in NJ.
If you live in Conn and sell a coin to someone in NJ there were be no sales tax collected in
    behalf of NJ.
If it were taxable then we all would be sending tax monies on internet sales (ebay for instance),
for all the across state line transactions.

Based on the original post, it looks as if the seller might be in NJ: ".. in NJ to a NJ resident".

Ahhhh Mark, again you have set me straight. I saw the handle and
made the assumption that the OP was in Connecticut. Oh, yes the
tax is owed! Perhaps I should get new glasses!
