(Another) Is this a fake? thread - Clemente Rookie on ebay

My eye is not as trained as many on this board but this sure looks suspicious.

The case (half of it) is clearly frosted and compromised/ tampered.
    A switcheroo took place somewhere.

What's funny is, his attempt on the flip is for up to date font style, but not close.
What's even funnier is, the new font style doesn't correspond with the old style hologram

  • Whether this auction continues to completion or not, truth is, someone will eventually buy this card and think it's the real thing.

PSA holders can be opened, the holdered card removed, and a fake or inferior card can be re-inserted, and then they can be resealed without falling apart. I know because I've bought a fake card that was cracked and resealed inside a real PSA holder with real PSA flip and the holder took some coaxing from me to come apart again.

PSA has a problem on it's hands. Their holders are flimsy and not tamper-proof and usually tamper-evident. Only for those whom really know what they're doing - they can crack and reseal them.

PSA will not change their holders. Believe me, I know.

Dude's got 6 auctions going - only 1 of a graded card and it just so happens to be a Clemente rookie? Come on dude. I feel sorry for the two saps who've already bid on this. Check out the '1' in the year on the case '1955.' Not even close to legit.
  • On top of everything others have mentioned, no way that card could be a PSA 6 with that upper right corner the way it is.

  • i just wrote him my feelings...

    Dear mmrvm,

i would be very careful if you end up selling this fake item, it has already been brought to the attention of your local authorities. if you are aware that this PSA holder has been tampered with, it is a federal offense. they do not treat this lightly, i am working on a numerous amount of these cases for them and your auction just crossed my desk.

do as you wish, take this as you may - i always like to present you with a warning first...

    your response is not necessary.

  • nice muggy. not that fear ever works with crooks on eBay.
  • His response...

    Dear muggyman,

thank you for letting me know, this is the way i bought the item but will remove it to send it to psa to make sure it is not fake

Buy the card, not the holder. The artificial aging on the back doesn't match up with the brighter looking front. Fake card in a compromised holder.
  • This is not the first time that a fake Clemente Rookie has been a topic on these Boards. Earlier, CU Board Member "ArchStanton" bought a fake Clemente RC that was placed inside a real PSA holder with real flip after the genuine Clemente RC had been removed.

It's pretty crazy that some can crack the holders, remove the real card, replace it with a photocopied fake (or real card in inferior condition), and still get the holder to reseal. At times, this can be done with so little holder edge frosting apparent that a viewer cannot discern that it has been tampered with just by looking at a scan.

Many high dollar cards in PSA holders are suspect.

The scam that got me was pretty simple. The guy bought PSA graded star cards, cracked them, submitted them to Beckett and sold them. No problem. However, he put photocopies of the cards in the cracked PSA slabs and sold them too. At least one of the cards even got a bump in the new holder.

It can't be that hard to put a strong adhesive on the flip to make it tear if you try to remove it. That would help the holder become more tamper evident. Until then, nothing will stop a scum-sucking lowlife from buying a few, say PSA 10 89 UD Griffeys, cracking and resubmitting or submitting to someone else, then filling the cracked slabs with NM cards. You put a $20 card under a $200 flip. There are tens of thousands of graded Griffeys, and the police don't care about baseball card scandals or card collectors.

PSA collectors can spot fake flips pretty quickly. PSA has done a great job making them unique, but casual buyers don't spot fake flips. They are shark food.

Wow! I forgot how bad that looks....to all of us it sticks out like a huge mole on the tip of your nose. I can see a novice collector getting burned rather easily though, to the tune of thousands of dollars. Whatever happened in your situation ArchStanton? Were you ever made whole, and did the seller get into trouble?
