Advice on New Basketball Set

I collect a lot of vintage baseball, and want to start a low cost basketball set in high quality.
I think 79-80 or 78-79 topps would be fun, any preference between the two, or other ideas? thanks!

  • Graded or raw?

I am currently working on the 1978-79 set and you can pick up cheap (<$5) PSA 8s if you are patient. The cheapest way is to wait for someone to list a big lot of graded cards.

I have considered buying a vending box, but that seems a little costly for this set.

yeah, the intent woudl eventually be graded, but picking up super nice cards raw and grading them is totally cool

I wouldn't call '86 low cost, especially in high grade.

'76-77 is a good bet. So is '75-76. Both contain plenty of stars, a few nice RC's, and they're both relatively cheap.

If I had the money, though, I'd go for '69-70. Not cheap.

I love 70s Basketball!!! Pick the one set design or the one that has the player selections that you like best 78.79,etc... Pull out some old Stevie Wonder or Sly and the Family Stone records(vinyl REALLY sets the mood if available)grab a 7-11 Big Gulp filled with Orange Soda and enjoy the ride. Right on! imageimage
