1973 Topps 53 Reprint Completed in PSA 8 or Better

I bought this 8-card set raw about 12 years ago and submitted it 5 years ago and it came back with 5 psa 8s and 3 graded less. Then I sort of forgot about it. A month or so hobby friend Duncan Harvey asked me if I would be interested in exchanging the three lower grade cards I had plus cash for his 8s. It was an easy decision and an easy transaction. Thanks Duncan.

This set is a bit modern for me but since it contains vintage players from the 1953 Topps Set I am defining i t as semi vintage(kind of the same category as 1970 Kellogg) image. The set contains legends Jackie Robinson and Satchell Paige but also Al Rosen and Johnny Mize. Another thing that makes the set interesting is that two players have the wrong picture. Card #4 Al Rosen is really Jim Fridley and card #6 identified as Clyde McCullough is really Vic Jancowicz. Yikes!

My set consists of 8 PSA 8s. There are really no rarities. Rosen is a pop 7 in psa 8 but has 6 psa 9s. Peanuts Lowrey is a pop 9 in psa 8 with 5 9s. It ranks tied for 5th on the PSA Set Registry behind The 53 Kid and one of the greatest guys in the hobby Anthony Nex. I will let it rest at that level.

The set represents the 106th vintage or semi-vintage set I have completed in psa 8 or better and the 44th baseball set. Thank you to all collectors and dealers for helping me achieve my goals.

Jim---there are 3 wrong cards in the set. "Carl Furillo" is Bill Antonello. I have often wondered if so many screw ups in a small set were not intentional in some way, a gag perhaps for some Topps event/dinner function. In any event, congratulations. I like the set

I didn't know that. The card I have is not labeled as such although the other two are.

    Thanks for the info.

    Great completion, Jim-

I've heard similar conspiracy theories about the wrong pictures. Was this set put together for some Annual Event or dinner -- kind of like the Rookie thing Topps used to put together in the early 1960s?

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Nice set Jim !!!!

I had a few of these that were graded , found them difficult to locate , then sold them.

Nice set to add to the list .---- Sonny
