Thoughts and input needed on collecting post-1985 HOF baseball base cards

ive been in collecting la-la land this year so far. Spreading myself thin here and there, all over the place. im starting to
get a picture of what i want to pursue going forward (or until i change my mind again).

Obviously this is PSA driven (no need to start a slab flame war here), but there comes a point even for this slab-head,
that slabs are not worth it. That point is 1986.

1986 saw the beginning of the mass production. there is nothing mainstream (non-rc wise) from 1986 forward that has "value"
per-se ungraded. Sure there is the odd exception, but not really.

I am going to put together a nice collection of HOFers that i grew up a fan of, from their playing days.. Thats my personal choice.
From 1985 and earlier, im going to concentrate on what i consider the "best" set released that year, and collect my list of players in
what i consider to be an acceptable PSA grade for that card. Of course money plays a factor in this and PSA 10's are not needed.

Here is my breakdown:

Condition Desired:
PSA 6+ for 1960 to 1969
PSA 7+ for 1970 to 1975
PSA 8+ for 1976 to 1979
PSA 9+ for 1980 to 1985
PSA 10 only if too good of a deal to pass up.

This is where id love some input from you guys. From 1986 onward, collecting raw is simple. hell, buying factory sets is the best,
cheapest way to make sure i get every card that id like of each player for that particular set. it doesnt hurt that most sets are under $10.

The list is about 30 players, but not many of them played past the 80s

how would you go about storing/displaying them in a cool way? of course, slabbed would be ideal, but i'd have to slab them all myself,
and i just dont want the cost required to do that.

i was thinking about sheets and albums for easy viewing. If going that route, should i just break down the sheets to include the same
set, or break it down to individual players on each page, maybe by year?

im still thinking this post-85 stuff through, but would like to hear what you guys do/think.

Thanks,
Eric

I would probably put them in binders by year. Another option would be to put them in top loaders, which I would also store by year (like the Old School Collecting post).

  • I would stick to just Topps brand...and go graded. Topps HOF PSA cards are pretty much always flipable. At least from 1986 to 1991-92 the pre-shiney modern era.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
