I was very pleased to win this tonight for considerably less than the max snipe I had set on it. Especially considering how many other folks were bidding on it. The seller is a forum member. I think it's got everything I'm looking for in a VG coin, and then some.
I started this VG Dansco album collection sometime between Christmas and the New Year. I think I'm maybe a third of the way through, already, though most of my coins fall into the later date range. Somebody told me to "buy the keys first" and that's great advice if you can afford it, but who can afford to buy all the keys to a collection up front? Still, I have managed to collect the three latter-date keys, now: the 1913, 1914, and 1915 Philadelphia issues.

<< <i>wouldn't it be great to get a whole set that looks like that. >>
I'm tryin', but I doubt I'll achieve such a goal and nail the proper look with every coin. Still, I'll grab as many as I can with this look.

I'm trying for the same thing.
Good luck to you LM!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Rob,
I wanted to pop this part out by itself because you mention something that folks should really listen to/think about.....
The "obvious" wisdom is to do what you say and "buy the keys first", however, I think that is only a good idea if you have enough funds to make large mistakes or really know what you are doing.
The way I look at it is that someone getting into a "new" series may not know what they really like for a look in the series. It's a lot easier to start/stop/re-start a few times on coins that are "cheap" and then sell those off for a minor loss, than it is to do that with some keys.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>Very nice look to this coin, which for a VG actually retains quite a bit of the LIBERTY. Most coins I see like this on eBay are described as VF. As I am completely dumb on this series, what would you (or anyone) say are the criteria to determine VG versus F or VF? Specifically what do you look for in a circulated Barber half, for educational purposes; I will add that I am looking to pick up a couple as type examples and not to build an entire set. Thanks. >>
Very generally speaking, a VG coin will have at least a couple letters in LIBERTY (if perhaps only two letters and two half-letters, for example). A higher-end VG coin will usually have 4 or 5 letters or so. A Fine coin must have a full LIBERTY, but it will be weak in places. A VF coin will have not only a full, sharp LIBERTY but a full headband as well.
For my raw VG set, I look for nice grey coins with full rims on both sides and a little bit of lettering on the headband, basically.
I'll defer to those who are specialists to offer advice. I'm mostly a novice in these as a series, having only collected them a month or so. But I've long liked the look of a Circulated (but not flat) Barber coin, just as I like low to mid-grade Indian cents and Morgan dollars. (I actually tend to slightly prefer the look of a circulated Morgan to an UNC, for some bizarre reason.)
Barberologists- did I read somewhere that a VG half should have an eye on the eagle? Wouldn't the variance of reverse strikes affect that sometimes? What else do you look for in a VG-F coin, for instance?
