Newp- key date Barber half for my VG Dansco set

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,430 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was very pleased to win this tonight for considerably less than the max snipe I had set on it. Especially considering how many other folks were bidding on it. The seller is a forum member. I think it's got everything I'm looking for in a VG coin, and then some.

I started this VG Dansco album collection sometime between Christmas and the New Year. I think I'm maybe a third of the way through, already, though most of my coins fall into the later date range. Somebody told me to "buy the keys first" and that's great advice if you can afford it, but who can afford to buy all the keys to a collection up front? Still, I have managed to collect the three latter-date keys, now: the 1913, 1914, and 1915 Philadelphia issues.

Very nice VG10. So close to fine. I still need one for my book and am aiming for VF-ish.

I'm tryin', but I doubt I'll achieve such a goal and nail the proper look with every coin. Still, I'll grab as many as I can with this look.

    Rob,

I wanted to pop this part out by itself because you mention something that folks should really listen to/think about.....

The "obvious" wisdom is to do what you say and "buy the keys first", however, I think that is only a good idea if you have enough funds to make large mistakes or really know what you are doing.
The way I look at it is that someone getting into a "new" series may not know what they really like for a look in the series. It's a lot easier to start/stop/re-start a few times on coins that are "cheap" and then sell those off for a minor loss, than it is to do that with some keys.

Having started the set several times, I know that the discipline it takes to pull it off in one grade and one look is too much for me, despite just wanting to crack open a complete Dansco set and admire it. They're beautiful.
    Good luck!
    Nice 14.

Nice coin. It seems like you are moving right along with this set. I have been stuck at the point of just needing 8 more coins to finish mine. It is very difficult to find them as you near completion. There are so many with worn down reverse rims.

Nice 14 LordM! I have been working on the same vg/fine set for a few years. It is one of the best sets for album display.

Very nice look to this coin, which for a VG actually retains quite a bit of the LIBERTY. Most coins I see like this on eBay are described as VF. As I am completely dumb on this series, what would you (or anyone) say are the criteria to determine VG versus F or VF? Specifically what do you look for in a circulated Barber half, for educational purposes; I will add that I am looking to pick up a couple as type examples and not to build an entire set. Thanks.

Gamer, you need 3 visible letters for a VG8, and supposedly 5 visible letters for a 10, but you won't get all five full and complete without the two middle ones showing at the top, the coins just don't wear that way, so what you end up with is a traditional VG10 with L I P ** T Y being graded as a Fine 12, or if the overall detail is strong, a Fine 15. If those letters are all bold but just a tad short of complete (L I P F P T Y) and the overall detail has filled out on the head-dress, star points, reverse wings, then you could conceivable get a VF20 but more accurately THATS what a 15 should look like. I always side on a full complete L I B E R T Y for VF. Some are beginning to hint that you don't grade by liberty but that's just an apology for gradeflation IMHO.

Very generally speaking, a VG coin will have at least a couple letters in LIBERTY (if perhaps only two letters and two half-letters, for example). A higher-end VG coin will usually have 4 or 5 letters or so. A Fine coin must have a full LIBERTY, but it will be weak in places. A VF coin will have not only a full, sharp LIBERTY but a full headband as well.

For my raw VG set, I look for nice grey coins with full rims on both sides and a little bit of lettering on the headband, basically.

I'll defer to those who are specialists to offer advice. I'm mostly a novice in these as a series, having only collected them a month or so. But I've long liked the look of a Circulated (but not flat) Barber coin, just as I like low to mid-grade Indian cents and Morgan dollars. (I actually tend to slightly prefer the look of a circulated Morgan to an UNC, for some bizarre reason.)

Barberologists- did I read somewhere that a VG half should have an eye on the eagle? Wouldn't the variance of reverse strikes affect that sometimes? What else do you look for in a VG-F coin, for instance?
