USS72TOPPS - "Admiral Frank; Permission to come aboard sir"

...and to the rest of the exalted crewmembers - Neil, Mike, Eric, Dale, Carlos and the gang aboard the USS72TOPPS I announce my enlistment. I've always loved the set so I thought it only right to climb aboard. Looking forward to uncovering those buried treasures!- like the Schaal In Action or the Alan Galagher card.
Great group you have going here. I hope to be able to bring something positive to the table.
Thought you might appreciate this last piece of trivia regarding my set effort. My first card? How about the sets longest last name (tie actually). Can you name it without looking? Check out my set for the answer when it goes up.

    Grabarkewitz?

Have you established a minimum grade?

So full of action, my name should be a verb.
  • Actually, I was quite impressed to see my name listed in your upload. All I've read is about the "Fab 5," which would be Frank Bakka, Mike Castaldi, Erik Jarvi, Carlos Aponte and Neil Downey. Since I'm at 60 plus percent, I propose the name "Splenderous Six."

    Will it catch on?

    Probably not.

  • Thanks Mike! Great website by the way! Minimum grade will be PSA 8 NQ. Without looking, thats amazing but expected for someone so entrenched in this set, you did pretty good...or did you peak. Actually it was a tie and you got the other card right. Any other no look guesses out there?
    Thanks again Mike.

    Welcome aboard Ray!

We knew that the endless hours of hounding would pay off eventually!
And Dale... you have to take 5th place on the registry. That way we can be the Fab Five and Carlos!

The Fab Five and Carlos? I think I have their latest CD.

Hey I named the FAB FIVE the FAB FIVE, and only I get to change it image.

Besides you guys are my favorite Card Cult.
  • Welcome to the '72 club Ray. Watch out, the initiations can be brutal at times. Perhaps you can offer a few PSA 8 NQ Paul Schaal IA cards to the top 6 to convince them to lighten the initiation.

I know this isn't a trading forum but I have a handful of PSA 8 NQ '72s on eBay. My eBay user name is 'gemint'.

Have fun building the set. Do you have a raw set to start off with or are you building it from scratch?

    Initiation options for Ray-

    * Finding PSA8-quality Schaal IA and Expos Team cards for the Superior Six
    * Memorize the 72 pop report and saying it backwards while intoxicated.
    * Explain why Jim Fregosi got not only a Boyhood card, but also a Traded card when the guy he was traded for got neither.
    * Explain why the Checklists seem so easy in PSA9 - and yet the Series 1 Checklist has not seen a 9 yet.
    * Tell us where we can get PSA9 commons for $28 - just like it says in the pop report image

    Mike
So full of action, my name should be a verb.
  • Mike,
    As to the initiation choices:

I have plenty of Schaal MIA cards in 8 quality for everyone if they count.

I dont drink; spend all of my money on cards!

Jim Fregosi is neither a boy or a hood; discuss amongst yourselves; and please dont bring up that bum he was traded for again! Nolan Ryan wink wink.

Series 1 checklists were said to be last found in 9 quality on a grassy knoll, in Dallas I think.

The SMR POP Report is just a subversive, secret graded pricing defense code guide, designed to prevent upstart grading companies like ZAG from relabeling it for their customers, rendering them unable to provide anything useful.

You might have to rethink Mike.

69Topps8 - Scratch, I'm afraid. I plan on scouring the hinterlands for quality commons using some of my connections from past 69' dealings on raw cards. I am sure you will catch me bottom feeding for a while on ebay to see if I can hook any PSA 8 "catfish".

I also plan on listing scans on this registry, something I havent done before. The first one went well. If I get a months worth of free time I might even go back and begin to scan in my 69' set.

Seriously, its good to rub elbows with this group.

Due to the need to be eligible for the '70's Registry Special, I too just signed on to the '72 Topps Baseball Registry. I guess it takes several days for my information to show up on the Registry. In addition, I'll be signing on to register my '70, '71, '73 Topps Baseball, '71 Topps Basketball, and several Kellogg's issues.

Dude's stellar credentials automatically include him in the FAB FIVE. One of you original FAB FIVERS will have to step down. Work it out amongst yourselves image.

Dude, which Kellogg's sets? Your 3-D participation is appreciated!!

    Gemmint,

Going just by unweighted numbers, my '72 Topps Set is 32% complete with about an 8.4 average. I think that would put me about 8th on the Registry List.

I'm going to enter '70 and '72 Kellogg's. I hope to do a '72 Kellogg's Master Set someday. That would include 21 variations.

All of my '70's sets are low priority for me. I want to get most of my '60's projects complete before I get serious about any of these '70's sets. The vast majority of my '70's graded cards are direct submissions to PSA.

  • Dear Members,
I seem to remember that my 72 Registry membership comes with a hat, winbreaker, or logo fleece. Somebody once mentioned that some Downey character was responsible for these disbursements. Would club members please email him to alert him of my membership and forward my merchandise. I'll take the fleece.
By the way, at what card count do I reach bronze status?

Ray> All those things are indeed included in the membership - for an additonal charge.
May I direct you to Mr. Downey who currently mans the concession stand.

You didn't think you'd get over for free, didja?

  • To all,
Thanks for the welcome. I am officially listed as of now on the updated 72' registry page (View all set listings). Starting from dead last was my preference. I look forward to the challenge of assembly and will definitely enjoy it! I will also post scans as I go.

    Ray,

It is great to have you aboard.

New man buys the drinks. Especially now since Jay missed out on being the 1000th set registered (by one minute) and all the cash rewards.

  • Can I rudely piggyback on Ray's birth announcement, to point out my own quiet initiation into the '72 faith a couple of weeks ago?

This is thanks in no small part to the good offices of my spiritual mentor Father Frank Bakka, whose encouragement and practical help have set me on the path to righteousness. Like Ray I expect to spend many of my early days at the back of the church, but in time, Who Knows?

  • liffeystynx - I am hoping that us back of the packers are actice players building our 72' sets moving forward. Turning the "fab five" into the "magnificent seven" or the "dirty dozen" should be our goal. Welcome aboard as well; and I encourage you to actively post on this subject so all can be counted. I am looking forward to seeing all those red updated bars for everyone collecting this set!

    FB,

Thank you for your kind words. There really wasn't any motive for just adding 9's. I had to start somewhere. I have 129 - 8's that I'll add one of these days. This set is about 5th on my priority list, so I won't be a major player on this '72 set for at least a year and probably two or three years. Hopefully by then, the 9 prices will come back to earth. Of the 118 - 9's, 98 were direct submissions to PSA. All 129 - 8's were also direct submissions. All of those 8's are borderline 9's. I could probably add another 200 to 300 - 8's from my complete set, but they are solid 8's and I'd like to keep the set as high end as possible.
  • Dude

Welcome to the 71 set as well!

    Zardoz51,

Thank you also! I'm also working on my all "9" 1971 set. So I have 9 down and 743 to go! I'm sure Keith Abrams in quivering in his boots right now. image

Actually, if I can finish this '71 set as an overall "8.01" set, I will be happy. Like the '72 set, it's not very high on my priority list.
