How would you describe yourself as a collector?

How would you describe yourself as a collector?

1 - Passive - You collect sometimes, but sometimes you could care less and you stop for a while. Maybe you move on to other things.

2 - Focused - You are passionate about collecting, but you are focused. You are constantly searching for that elusive card, but if the price is too high, you are reasonable and will wait if you can't afford it.

3 - Erratic - You love collecting, but you can't stick to one theme. You buy anything and everything with no rhyme or reason. You are just as proud of that non sports card as you are of your Mickey Mantle card.

4 - Insane - Collecting is a disease and you can't control yourself. You will pay anything for that card you want no matter if it breaks you or not. Of course, if you can afford it, then I would not part yourself in this category.

Me - I would say number 2.

What say you?

Shane

5 - Passifocuratsane - sometimes, i could care less until i find that elusive card that makes me proud, but has no rhyme or reason, and i paid so much for it that i cannot part with it nor categorize my disease.
  • I am number two. Describes me perfectly.

    By height.

Edited to add: Sorry, I misread the question, I thought it was "How do you compare yourself to other golfers?". My apologies.
  • I guess it depends on the day. So today is Friday, I am probably a 2. Saturday and Sunday, well somewhere between 3 and 4. Monday, I am probably a 1. All kidding aside, I am probably a 2.75. I definitely want to be a 2, but I am way too impatient for that. I grew up lower middle class, so now I am reliving the childhood with a little bit of money behind me! It is pretty bad when your 10 year old son is the patient more reasonable one. My son is always saying, " Dad, do we really need that card?"

I'm mostly a 2 but I have periods of 4 where I tend to spend more than I should and venture out of my main focus areas. Today, for instance, I got a PSA 8 1914 Polo Grounds Game Frank Baker in the mail (thanks Donato!) which doesn't fit anywhere in my collection. Not even close. LOL

    #2 sprinkled with some cocaine

I have not stopped collecting since October of 1970 when I bought my first packs of 1970 Topps at Woolworths

I never stopped even during my late teen years while dating

I guess you could say collecting is my life. There are worse things I could be doing.

I would say #2... However, it took me a couple of years to get focused. If you would have asked me a few years ago, when I first got back into collecting, I would have been a solid #3.

    Describes me perfectly.

Also, I reserve the right to become a #4 at some point in the future.

    I see, I want, I buy... But sometimes, I see, I want, I cry...
  • 2 : Focused I'm only looking for certain items.

Anyone have any 1963 Bazooka All-Time Greats graded a 7 or better? Currently #4 all time best set.

I think I'm a 2, but my wife says I am a 4. She says my love of collecting sports cards and memorabilia is an obsessive compulsive disorder.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Random chaos, more random when I have more money!
  • I am a 5 ....

I fit no perimeters and have stopped collecting traditional sports cards. My apetite for exotic and rare is insatiable. I am obsessive about knowing everything about soccer cards in the world (and do).

    ... I would hate be called a number two ... potty-wise.

As usual a good question Shane.

    I would say a solid 2.

I do stray a bit from time to time - but all and all I stay on a yearly budget and on focus.

I'm mainly/mostly #2: Focused, but I'm #4: "Determined" when it comes to buying it. Price should never be a deterrent when you NEED it, instead it's an opportunity to get creative to complete the transaction (via sale/trade).

    2&3
  • I would say, #1 and 2.

I havent subscribed to psa for years, ebay searches are pretty infrequent now days. But I still check sites like the BBC Exchange (and get excited about new boxes I dream of buying....like their $20,000 68 topps hockey box). New things like that keep me interested in the hobby. Or new finds.

Plus other hobbies have pulled me away...1980's GI Joe, Nintendo. And other toys, and memorabilia.

  • I go between 2 and 5, doing my best to stay closer to 2. Signs on #5 for me include using my line of credit to buy a must have card as well as credit card checks, etc. Spending half my yearly bonus on cards vs putting more in the bank for savings. Deciding my ebay store didnt have enough items so going out and buying a couple K of stuff just to flip, lol.
