Went to the bank today for my first Half Dollar roll purchase

They had 50 rolls, but only had enough cash for 14. While standing in line, there was an old timer next to me at the other teller.
I would say in his mid to late 70's. He saw the teller put the rolls on the counter for me and said
"Are you looking for gold coins?" I was thinking that at his age he would surely know I was looking for
silver halves. So I told him I was looking for pre-65 coins and he just looked at me like I was from Mars.

When you guys buy halves in rolls at the bank, do any of you use a metal detector to find out if they have
silver so you don't have to open and then re-wrap them if they're only clad?

What got me thinking about the detector is when she said she had fifty rolls and I thought how
cool it would be just to scan the rolls while at the bank and say "I'll take this one and that one
over there."

You really want to look for pre-71 image

And ... did you find any?

They are for my son. I'm going to let him open them. I forgot about the 40%ers

No metal detector here. I go through them one by one. Have fun!

I just check the edges. It's all about the silver for me.

You mean you don't look for gold ones too?
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

You don't care for the 40% silver?

I think the non silver ones are made of metal too.

    Scratch the detector idea!

Good luck - you never know what might show up. When I get machine rolled coins I just crack them open then dump them in a plastic coin bag that the bank gives me for deposits. I fill the bag up and just deposit it like cash. Pretty easy system and they never complain. I never thought about using my detector on it. If they are customer rolls I just open them and slide them into my hand and take out any silvers and re-roll them up adding any clad needed. It's been a little slow lately but about a year ago I stopped in and asked for rolls and got about $350 worth, I was a bit surprised when I open the customer rolls and found this. Like I said you never know.... image

Most metal detectors have a fine discrimination setting which in theory allows the user to cancel out junk metal but in reality i agree theres minimal chance it would work in this scenario.Copper/nickel isn't considered junk metal by most machines (detectors) Iron is the chief culprit it trys to cancel out.Oddly aluminium will give the same reading as gold in many instances , i think that's why the ring pull is the curse of the hobby.Just a bit of somewhat useless trivia there : )
