Question about paypal

If someone sends you a GIFT payment, is there anyway they will be able to file a claim to get their money back? If they want their money back?

If somebody claims their account was hacked and they didn't authorize the payment then yes.

Yup. Unauthorized Use is the only viable claim on a gift payment.

Here is the list of exempt transactions. ALL transactions not listed
are subject to INR/SNAD claims --- Regardless of which venue
    the transaction occurred on.
ALL venues - including BST boards -
are now covered by the "purchase protection" scheme.

    NOT covered:

    Intangible items, including Digital Goods
    Services
    Real estate, including residential property
    Businesses
Vehicles, including motor vehicles, motorcycles, caravans, aircraft and boats
    Custom made items
Travel tickets, including airline flight tickets
Items prohibited by the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy
Items which you collect in person, or arrange to be collected on your behalf
Items that violate eBay’s Prohibited or Restricted Items Policy
    Industrial machinery used in manufacturing
Items equivalent to cash, including prepaid or gift cards
    PayPal Direct Payments
    Virtual Terminal Payments
    Personal Payments

Even if your payment is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection, you can file a Dispute and to try to resolve the issue directly with the seller, however, PayPal will generally not find in your favor if you escalate a Dispute to a Claim for an item which is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection.

  • Thanks for the info. The reason why i ask is because i have a strange situation on ebay. A buyer from sweden wants 3 of my BIN items and is asking for my paypal account so his buddy who owes him money can pay it. I told him i would have to send the items to the address on the paypal account.

I would not do an international PP transaction with an
EBAY-stranger, UNLESS the payment was transmitted
    as a Personal Payment/Gift.

I was going to tell him to have his buddy send the money as a gift. But if he claims his account was unauthorized, i lose out?

Yes, you would likely lose an Unauthorized Use claim.

But, that is the case with ANY transaction done thru PayPal.

If the guy in Sweden has a PP account, he can send you a
gift from that account; and, you can ship his stuff insured.
If he wants to pay extra, you can send it via Express Mail,
but YOU will not get any extra benefit by doing so.

If such a buyer forwards any of your written communications -
regarding "gift payments" - to EBAY/PayPal, you will get scolded.

Well, the folks around me can't work from all the alarms going off here.

If his buddy owes him money, his buddy can pay HIM via PayPal. THEN he can pay you. You're not a loan broker, are you? As others have mentioned, this buyer request is probably designed specifically for the purpose of filing an unauthorized use claim.

That is certainly true, but ANY transaction using PP is risky.

If we adopt the "just don't do it" rule and extend it to ALL
risky transactions, we would not be able to sell using EBAY
    and/or PayPal.

    ...............

I am going to test some non-EBAY listings with terms that
call for "USPS Money Orders" as the ONLY payment method.

I expect poor results. But, based on the high number of EBAY
buyers that still wanna pay with paper, I might be surprised.

I told the buyer to have his buddy send the money to his account. Got no response to that. He has alot of feedback but i looked him up on toolhaus and has a LOOOOONNNNGG history of leaving negs to sellers for lost items. The only thing that kept me from blocking this guy is, he has bought several items from me in the past with no problems. I think i'm going to back out because the 3 items total $500.

He's in Sweden. He may not be up right now in order to respond.

If he pays from his own account and you ship to
his PP addy - using the right shipping feature - you
    should be fine.

You need SigCon to be online viewable. EMI is the
service I would use, adding the extra insurance fee.

You could ask him for an international money order,
but even if he is not a crook he might balk.

It can be soooooooooo troublesome to use EBAY/PP.
