1972 Lincoln Double Die Question:
Datentype
Is anybody knowledgable about different DDO types? I have found 5 that have nice doubling on the In God We Trust and lesser doubling on the date and just a little doubling on the Liberty - below the L and inside the B if i remember correctly. Are these type !!'s or III's? Are they worth anything? They are ms64-66 level. Does PCGS slab these or is it an ANACS type submission? Are they even worth submitting? Thanks for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

There are at least (8) different Dbl Die Obv's for 1972.Even in 65RD they don't bring much of a premium except of course the Type 1&2.
Registry 1909-1958 Proof Lincolns
Doubling is strong on the motto and moderate on the date and liberty.
Can you post a pic?
The 1-O-I, 2-O-I, and even the 3-O-I are worth the big bucks.
In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!
I think it’s hard to tell from your description which of the varieties you have. If Spooly is correct and it is Die #4, then you have a pretty good find. As the CPB says, “this is unquestionably the rarest of the nine 1972 DDO’s we are presenting here. The vast majority of attributed specimens are misattributed examples of one of the others. Rim cuds are evident next to LIBERTY on most known specimens. Make no mistake about it; this one is rare!” They also suggests a value far greater than any of the other varieties, besides the main one.
If you have access to the Cherrypickers’ Guide (4th edition), compare your coins to the very good pictures they have of all the varieties. If you don’t have a copy of the Guide, I’ll be glad to send you scans or photocopies of the pages. LMK.
Another point: If you decide to have them slabbed, you might consider NGC as well as ANACS. NGC now has a variety plus service, but I don’t know how astute they are at differentiating subtle varieties. ANACS has had a lot more experience with that work.
