Wanting help with Gold Coins

Hi All
I'm wandering over from the sports board. I am wanting to diversify my portfolio by buying a gold coin or 2. I would just buy a bar, but what's the fun in that?
I really need help figuring out gold coins. I know there is the 5 dollar and 10 dollar U.S. gold coins. If I'm buying mostly for the gold content, will I get a coin that is closer to spot value if I buy a foreign coin instead? I'm wanting something minted in the at least pre 1900- because that'll make it more interesting. I like the idea of my gold investment having numismatic value as well as the gold value.
Also are the $5 and $10 liberty head gold coins close to pure, or what % are they? I'm having trouble finding good information on that. Also, does anyone have anything they want to sell? I don't want a high grade coin, just something that looks nice and is not way above the gold content value, but has some collectible value also. Not too much to ask, right? :-)

These are contradictory goals.
Different gold coins have different premiums, and you can't have a coin with numismatic value if you want to buy near spot.
Other than that, any of the suggestions already given are good.
I knew it would happen.

So you would not get numismatic value when buying a pre-1900 Gold Sovereign. They can be had for a lower premium and often times near spot price if you have patience. Ive bought many a Sovereigns and European gold for near spot especially if you take into account cash back and rebates used on Ebay
You CAN have a coin with numismatic value and buy it near spot. It happens all the time

fantastic.... teach me your ways..
What do I need to look for in terms of counterfeit coins? In cards we would be looking for telltale signs of counterfeits if not buying slabbed cards. What are those signs on vintage gold coins that you would buy on eBay? I'm such a rookie I need major help.
thanks for the replies so far.
