Thinking of starting a 1953 Topps set

Any advise? What will it cost me to put one of these together? I'm thinking of starting by bidding on EX commons in an eBay set break. How much can I expect to pay per card? Or, would I be better off to shop around and buy a complete set? One went for $3,600 in VG/EX recently.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Real nice looking set. IMO it would be a lot cheaper to buy the entire set at once. HOWEVER, you will NOT get the enjoyment of putting the set together. I guess it really depends on what you are looking for.

I see more and more complete raw sets popping up and being sold, you will get a smoking deal purchasing a whole set without a question.
Imagine all the money wasted in shipping fee's.

    Great choice by the way!

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I may just get nice examples (no creases, EX condition) of Mantle and Mays. They themselves don't come cheap, however.

I have been working on a set for the last 6-8 months in exmt and have made it to about 70% of the way done. It has been a ton of fun. Here are some examples from my set. Doing the '54 set the same way/condition and have 20 to go. Enjoy!

Sorry for all the scans, its not often I get to show them off.
  • Great set. My favorite in fact. I have most of the low # 1-220 minus the mantle in mid grade (I sold my 6, I'm an idiot)

Some of the high numbers are a little crazy. Podres, Gilliam,....

Mantle and Mays graded 5 will run you just shy of $2000 for the pair.

You can definitely get some decent lots in the low # to get you started.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.

ss, that is a beautiful set. Nice job on the centering too! Judge, after looking at that I'd build the whole set.

  • I am working on a 5/6 graded set... You can get raw mid grade for about $6 a common (for the better centered ones). Of course Yankee's sell higher, and the high numbers get out of control at times.
