Your oddest collecting focus

I just finished a deal with a board member for a 69 Diego Segui, and it got me wondering what were some of your odd collecting goals. Mine is the 69 expansion teams graded, as that was my first year of collecting and I found myself constantly opening Pilots and Padres for the next 2-3 years. Something about that odd mix of players on those first few teams, some of whom only got 1 card ever.

Brian Downing cards, game used items, etc.
  • I used to only collect Alaa Abdelnaby cards. I would trade any card from the same set for the Abdelnaby card. Jordan or Magic for Abdelnaby all day long.

Don't know why I decided to collect him....but I am sure it made sense at the time.

Don't know where those went, would be funny to see the boxes now though!

One area that's on the oddball side - I collect sports related whiskey decanters:

    image

The bulk of these decanters were made in the 70s - the big companies - Jim Beam and Ezra Brooks. If one is a college team collector - there's plenty - some of the BB team decanters go for more money - e.g. I would like a Cubs decanter but they always go for more than I'm willing to pay at the time.

Another - and this set is complete - 1952 Baseball Emblems:

    image

The set is complete at 16 - the number of teams present in '52. Note that it says ya can put them on your card or bike but also use as an ice scraper.

Here's a checklist - and it's in the order the teams prevailed in 1952 - with the Yanks winning everything that year.
    American League

    1. Yanks (Pennant & WS Champ)
    2. Indians
    3. White Sox
    4. Athletics
    5. Senators
    6. Red Sox
    7. Browns
    8. Tigers

    National League

    1. Dodgers (Pennant)
    2. Giants
    3. Cardinals
    4. Phillies
    5. Cubs
    6. Reds
    7. Braves
    8. Pirates

dunno if it's necessarily odd to be a bobblehead head, unless you consider that i needed to have this dude arrive before Sunday, so we could sit in the Big Room and watch the Big Game on the Big Screen. image

my first Bears nodder and he will be added to the shelf with the old square-based Rams, Lakers & Angels guys & the chipped up Baltimore bird.

Considering all the crap I took from a couple of members on this board, I guess they thought it was kind of odd also !!!!!
But, I did get some help from other members, so I am still trying to find where about 15 or so are laid to rest.

Born in 1977 and have been a die-hard Packers fan since about as long as I can remember. Got it into my head sometime ago that I would build the best graded 1977 Topps Packers team set possible. Sure, I currently sit at #1 on the registry... but I've got several hundreds of dollars tied up into what is essentially a $2-3 team set ungraded!

I have been collecting full, unopened 1980s wax boxes of misc. sports products(such as Fleer Star Stickers, Topps Scratch-offs, etc.), then setting them up on display with the packs showing - just like they would have been at stores back in the day. In addition to Larry Allen cards (in particular the low numbered Pacific ones) I collect "all" the other football players that played at Sonoma State. It's a small collection: Freddie Bradley, Ted Popson (before transferring), some guy who played in the UFL, and I think that's it. Would love to get some of the Arena Football cards of a few other Sonoma State "alumni" but haven't really looked into that yet. Also, a couple of baseball players went to Sonoma... one currently in the bigs actually but can't remember his name. Other than a few of the Larry Allen cards they are all without any monetary value whatsoever!

I also collect people I know. Not just met at a card show but actually know like golfer Scott McCarron, Bobbie Jackson, Shareef Abdur Rahim come to mind. There are a couple others. Again, very low (to no) value.

Also have a small collection of athletes from Sacramento: Eddie LaBaron, Matt Barnes, etc.... A few of the LaBarons cost a few bucks but most of these are very cheap.

I also get most of my UCLA autographed cards graded/authenticated even though most are of no value. I think I got a 10 on one of my Pro Set James Washington cards. Woooo whooooo!
