1978 Topps Jack Morris rookie card

This is an interesting card that has 4 players on it. Morris has strong showing on the HOF ballot. This card is double printed, meaning before Topps was cutting the sheets into cards, each sheet tended to have some repeated cards in the sequence and one of them was this card. So, there are twice as many Morris rookies out there than a typical 1978 Topps card. Even with that extra supply, this card in PSA 9 is more valuable than many 80s star cards in PSA 10 condition.
About half a decade ago, this card was going for $20-25, now its averaging over $30.
Completed Auctions
There is a current auction going on right now reaching $39.
This card is doing well in the recession!

I go for the second year cards of most of them.
I am wondering how many starting pitchers have made the HOF in the last 15 years. If there were not that many, then maybe a case for Morris, but with the big four coming up plus Mike Mussina, that is already a crowded group. Then there is David Cone and Kevin Brown to consider who have had more dominating years than Morris plus had their post season heroics too. Brown has already been dropped but even he had better stats than Morris--perhaps one can argue the sportsmanship issue that Brown did not have it, while Morris was classy.
Burger King card? How does that look like? Its a 1978 Burger King Jack Morris? That would be an awesome rookie card. Probably worth more than the regular Topps version. There are none on ebay now.

Working on the following: 1970 Baseball PSA, 1970-1976 Raw, World Series Subsets PSA, 1969 Expansion Teams PSA, Fleer World Series Sets, Texas Rangers Topps Run 1972-1989

I agree with Deutsch on his point about SPs, except that I think Mussina is a lock. I never really looked at his stats until this last HOF vote when a SI writer mentioned him. His case is similar to Blyleven's but a little stronger.
The Trammell and Whitaker cards look like they are in pre-half point holders. The Morris is in the new flip holder. Perhaps the Trammell and Whitaker cards might grade 8.5 or 9 if cracked out.
The 70s print run was nowhere near the 80s. Also, there were less card companies to choose from. I guess Topps and Burger King are the only rookie cards of Trammell, Whitaker, Morris and Molitor. No Topps Tiffany.

Do you know any other rookie or star cards that were double printed? Are there many examples?

<< <i>In 78 Topps made Burger King team sets for the Tigers, Astros, Rangers, and Yankees. The Tigers is by far the coolest, but I still wish they would have put in a Lance Parrish. >>
I agree! Lance Parrish would have been great. Its odd they put both Whitaker and Trammell in the set as they were both also on multiplayer RCs. You would have thought they had done the same with Parrish. I love the 70s BK sets...the only one I still dont have is the Rangers.

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 is probably the most famous one, although it was only double printed among the high #'s.
In 1978 through 1981, Topps produced 792 card sets with DPs, so I'm sure there are examples in those years.
<< <i>The Baseball Writers seem to think he is a HOF because look at the support he is getting. I don't have so much a problem with Jack Morris going into the HOF, but there are going to be other more deserving pitchers coming up that need to be in first: Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and then maybe Mike Mussina. >>
Smoltz is a rock solid candidate, as well.

Brown being named in the Mitchell Report is what cost him. He was a borderline case, anyway. Cone has already gone one and done, in the 2010 ballot.
Most people thought going into this year's voting that Morris needed to make a move up, which would place him in good position for next year, which is probably his last, best chance to get in, considering the avalanche of candidates that is coming. Instead, his totals stayed almost stagnant. It's going to take a real push for him to get in and I don't think it's going to happen.
Nice card, though. I wish there was a Burger King Dale Murphy.
Well, the card finally became a winner and Morris enshrined!

Blyleven was CLEARLY a better pitcher, not by a lot, but pitched a lot more innings with better numbers, except W-L% which is a team number.
