Who has the lone 1969 Mike Shannon in 8?

If there is anyone who knows who has the 1969 Mike Shannon in 8, email me at rjc012661@aol.com

  • Don't have it but I do have a raw one that has a very good chance at an 8. It's a tough card. I'm just hoping that black line on the left hand border doesn't downgrade it. I think I've seen a few PSA 8 Stottlmyre's that had the same problem so I doubt PSA will downgrade for it. I'm going to submit it with my next batch. I'm still looking for a nice Satriano though. That #21 Santiago also seems to be pretty tough. Good luck with your search.

  • Ray - If my memory hasn't failed me, I think the population in 8 or better for the Raditz is still 0. Mine is NM/MT but has some snow. I don't think it would get an 8 NQ image

I went through the pop report the other day and I think there are still about 25 cards with 0 population in 8 or better. There are still quite a few cards with pop's less than 3 in 8 or better. It will be tough to get to 100% in PSA 8 NQ or better. It still baffles me why some commons have populations in the twenties or even fifties while others languish at very low levels. If I were sitting on a vending run, I would focus on grading out the low pop cards instead of the Rich Nye's and Al Dark's.

In my recent search thru some of my brothers old packed boxes I found some 1st series 69's. Of course all the easy ones were well centered and all the tough ones werent. There was a Satriano that might 8. Its close. The 3 Shannons were horrible.

Seems to be the story of our lives. I bought a series 1 cello awhile back and opened it hoping for a nice Brock, Satriano or Rodriguez (or Rodriquez). Most of the cards were 65-35 or worse and none of the tough cards were included. Of course I got a decent Fryman, Morehead and AL ERA leader card. I think it was a conspiracy by Topps to produce the first series this way so it would all drive us nuts! image I have two more cellos but I don't dare to open them. It was fun to do one time for the thrill of it which is the main reason why I opened it.

If you get an 8 on the Satriano and decide to sell it, let me know what you want for it or when it will be auctioned.
  • It seems to me that sheets of 1st Series, especially, must have included additional McBeans, Darks, Nyes, ERA Leaders and the like. Can anybody confirm or deny that these uncut sheets from Series 1 doubled up cards.

    Ray,
I actually have an uncut 1969 sheet from series 1. Each series consisted of 2 sheets. Each sheet consisted of 2 of each card on the sheet. There are no double prints on my sheet but there could be on the other sheet because the # of cards in the series doesnt add up to an equal #. I believe the Clemente and probrably a handful of commons were DP on the second sheet. The sheets are also not in a numerical order. My sheet has a Shannon on it. Its a end row card thats why there almost always OC.

I also have a great 1971 sheet with 2 Munson's, Jackson's, Rose's, Blyleven's, Concepcion's on it. If I could ever get anyone to cut it properly that would be a nice score.

    Gaspipe:

PSA wouldn't grade them even if you could find someone...

HOWEVER, you can probably hook up with some contacts (I have a few e-mail addresses for leads, if you would like) of the individuals who were responsible for cutting up many 1970s O-Pee-Chee baseball cards sheets, and having the results encapsulated by BGS and BVG. Though the cards do have many of the tell-tale signs of trimming (e.g. bat ears, etc.) Beckett graded nearly all of them, with over 95% coming back with 9.5s and 10s for the subgrades on centering.

Very profitable for the cutter -- very poor decision for anyone who cracks them out of their holders and hopes to get them graded by PSA...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Where is the Brock card located on the sheets? My guess is that's another end card since it's almost always OC.

The Brock is an end row card as well on the opposite side. It isnt on top thats why some cards have the line on them.

Is there anything you guys don't know? This thread has impressed the sheet out of me. I'm sure Stalin will be on calling me a butt kisser, but I gotta say I get more out of reading this board than I do in all the publications out there that apply to card collecting.
  • Yes!! I agree, an excellent thread about cards, and only cards. Thanks for the information.

  • gaspipe - I recently came across some more Mike Shannon 69's. A motlier crue of cards you will not see! None of this particular lot were worthy of grading anyway due to basic wear and tear issues. The centering was about as bad as I have seen on 69's. The four examples I saw were all 90/10 or worse with 1 being miscut on the back.
Has your search improved any? Or should we maybe settle for a PSA graded version of his second cousin Del Shannon!

  • What do you think an 8 of this card would go for? $100? $200?

sorry to bust in on this post, but maybe i can get some advice from you all...speciall mikeschmidt. i have a super nice 68 topps ryan rookie. i've sent to psa but they won't slab saying it's "miscut". it has terrific centering and razor sharp corners on the bottom. the problem is, is that it is a mm or so too big...on the top! tony, the psa reviewer told me at a show, that i "should" get an 8 if it got through. the only problems are on the top border...a slight ding and just a touch on the corners. i'm thinking that maybe if it was cut, those problems would be gone and i'd have a tiny shot at a 9. so, the delima is... do i leave it raw, have it cut by a pro and send to bvgs(bgs), or just send it in to bvgs as it is???? i'm going to try and attach a pic, so if any of you can offer a suggestion, please lmk! gaspipe...sorry again for the butt-in and i'll take a look to see if i have a nice enough shannon!! thanks!! tim hadley

Whatever you do, don't have it cut!!! It would change the card from "miscut" to "Evid trim". A miscut card has much more legitamacy than a trimmed card. Even if the card is professionally cut, it is still considered altered. Try SGC or BVG. SGC may not grade it but BVG probably will. Good luck.
  • No luck here either. My Shannon is 90/10 side to side and would confidently secure a PSA 6. My Rodriquez variation has absolutely razor sharp corners with unfortunately 95/5 centering top to bottom. Worse news is that there may be a small batch (about 15 cards) of high grade series 3 cards heading for GAI. The experienced seller believes half of the lot could achieve a PSA 9. Nevertheless, he believes that GAI will be the way to go for vintage in the future. I haven't presuaded him to go to PSA instead because I haven't seen the cards or agreed to purchase them.
