More quality eBay buyers...

I received this message from a bidder who won two of my auctions last night:

"

<< <i>I would like to request to cancel the 1975 Topps Yount purchase. I didn't realize it was a "MINI". As you can see I bid and just lost the Yount prior to this one. I assumed they were both regular cards. It wasn't until I received your invoice that I saw "mini". Sorry for the hassle but maybe you can offer it to the next highest bidder. Please respond and let me know if I can do that and resend updated invoice w/ just the 1985 Topps Clemens. Thanks again and sorry for the hassle. >>

The title of the auction was "1975 Topps Mini Robin Yount..." - not to mention it was PSA graded with "Mini" on the label and "Mini" in the auction description. Just to add insult - I let this guy off the hook and offered a Second Chance Offer to the runner up with had a $30 bid in. He turned around and said he'd do it for $25 and free shipping. Good times on the Bay.

So essentially, if I follow, what we have is thieves selling to idiots (this assumes of course that Jeff sends the 1985 Clemens in a well-packaged shoe box via media mail).

And they (we) are all getting a reach around from PP/eBay. Don't forget the key problem.

Chandler: Yo, paisan. Can I talk to you for a sec? Your tailor... is a very bad man!
Joey: Frankie? What are you talking about?

Ross: [Ross enters and touches Chandler on the shoulder, who flinches]

    Ross: Hey, what's going on?

Chandler: Joey's tailor... took advantage of me.

    Ross: What?

Joey: No way. I've been going to theguy for 12 years.

Chandler: Oh, come on. He said he was going to do my inseam, and then he ran his hand up my leg, and then there was definite... cupping.

Joey: That's how they do pants! First they go up one side, they move it over, then they go up the other side, they move it back, and then they do the rear.

Joey: [Chandler and Ross stare at him] What? Ross, would you tell him? Isn't that how a tailor measure pants?

Ross: Yes. Yes, it is... In prison! What's the matter with you?

I have made a mistake picking up a mini or vise versa by mistake however I just kept the card and sold it off myself.

It's a reasonable mistake on the buyer's end - but has turned into an annoying situation on my end. Probably not thread worthy - but I felt a lot better after posting it.

Two words: Caveat emptor. Either your buyer is a flake, blind or stupid. Maybe all three. If your post included the typical disclaimer: "No returns on TPG cards," you were under no obligation to be the nice guy that you were. And even if it didn't. Just saying. Where in this issue is this clown's share of the blame?

    Or careless----bidding without reading
  • Steiner/MLB auctions run so much better than fleabay. Bidders are required to pre-authorize a credit card, and then once the auction ends, that credit card is automatically charged and the item shipped. A similar system is desperately needed on ebay. The charge shouldn't go through automatically, because the seller should be able to combine shipping on multiple items won by a single bidder, but the seller should be able to click a "collect payment" button that will allow the seller to control when payment is sent, not the deadbeat buyers. There's no reason this couldn't be implemented without compromising any of the buyer protection policies currently in place. The only reason fleabay doesn't mandate it is because they know it will discourage deadbeats from bidding. Not only do the deadbeats who stiff sellers increase ebay's revenue for the listings they win (since many sellers don't go to the trouble of filing a claim for a FVF credit) but they also drive up the final closing amounts of auctions they bid on but don't win, which also helps fleabay's bottom line. It's obscene that ebay exploits sellers this way. The seller is taking all the financial risk of investing in physical inventory and fleabay takes none of the risk. When things go bad, the sellers get left holding the bag, and fleabay just continues on, just like any other faceless, institutionalized body of zero accountability. No wonder Meg Whitman tried to run for governor. Fleabay is so inefficient, it's practically a government agency.
  • Request to not follow thru with the transaction on ebay and then relist it. You don't lose any fees and it only takes about a minute to do it. That's not as bad as when I sold a Silver Eagle to a guy who right after the auctioon emailed me and said he didn't have the money for it. Ummm, why bid then?

It was when silver was sky rocketing too. His loss. I ended up getting more for nthe item after relisting.

I appreciate all of the feedback guys. It seems like there's a lot of people winning auctions that have no business being in the mix. I decided to take the high road in this case and hope the relisted card gets close to what it closed at last time around. I'm sure this won't be the last time I have to deal with a situation like this.
