0 feedback 0 transactions, new ebay buyer, since Jan09?

Do you ever wonder why someone like this would decide to bid on/snipe one of your highest priced coins listed ($600+), for their first time on ebay, after 2+ years of doing nothing?

I just had a 0 feedback buyer hit a Buy It Now for a $2500 item and he was a member since 2006. He did pay right away. Should I be worried?

As long as you have the go-ahead to ship from PayPal and it is covered by seller's protection AND you require signature confirmation, I wouldn't worry.

I think your assumption may be wrong->

for their first time on ebay, after 2+ years of doing nothing?

they may have multiple accounts for many reasons

I've had an increasing number of zeros and low feedbackers with no activity for a long time. All have paid. My hunch is that they are buyers who left eBay because they got hosed, knew somebody that got hosed, or generally became afraid because of the crappy reputation eBay had developed for scams. Now, they're returning to the site because eBay has made it far safer to shop.

  • I usually give folks a few weeks to pay. This one doesn't feel right, though, ...I don't remember ever having a buyer with an 800 number, but I'm sure many do, I've had one, just not listed.

Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't mention earlier, it's a non/slow-payer, so no shippee, yet, by any means.

Also, sometimes people have these accounts simply to buy high dollar items and

don't want other people to know (feedback)

I recently sold a few higher valued items to very low feedback ebayers all went

off w'o a hitch. One name I recognized. Another reason could be that is a new buying account.

    Good for you.

What's your policy on payment time? If they're late, I'd just cancel the sale. Follow your intuition.

go to usps.com and check their address using "find a zip code. "

if it is a totally fake address, their site will not return a zip+4 code for it.

  • Well, things could be worse, I just received this message:

"If you would, please send mailing info, I will pay by check for this item. thanks again.
I would like to have the item shipped to the address below:
    Jxxx Jxxxxxxx
    xxxx E. 3 st.
Santa ana, CA 92705 United States "

Needless to say, I do not say I will accept checks in my auction descriptions. I hate it when people do this. Do I insist I must ship to PP approved addresses, for my own protection? At least the address is the one shown on the View Order Details page...

This guy is asking for another invoice, I already sent one. Something rotten is going on with all this.

ed. - nope, the address was not verifiable...

hmmm, but the ebay guidelines say OK, if Order Details page addy is OK, or PPs Transaction Details page addy is OK...

dang, MapQuest doesn't show anything for this address range between 1st street and 4th street, just a parking lot from what I see...

If he doesn't want to use pay pal I would tell him to send you a postal money order....Too many bad things can happen taking checks. Of course this is just my opinion.

And don't ship until you cash it at the PO.
If he won't do that or PP cancel it.

  • At this point, I wouldn't want to go through with the sale and would be looking for a way out. I'd draw a hard line on taking Paypal only because I'd be betting they weren't going to pay up. Wait until their time has run out and cancel sale due to non-payment. I suppose there's a chance they could give you negative feedback though. And then block.

Bonus. You just got a 3% bonus. You can't say that you will take checks, against ebay rules. Ebay has to say that it is ok to take checks IF THE BUYER SUGGESTS IT to avoid some legal issues. I would say fine, send your check. Check must clear before shipping. Have a good day. --Jerry

  • stinking ebay, who knows what they'll say is OK anymore? buyers know it, too.

yessir, it's situations like this that are negs just waiting to happen...

Yup, if paypal detils page for the payment shows "OK to ship" and it says "eligible" for seller protection, you are protected by paypal as long as you have delivery confirmation for items under $250 or signature confirmation for items over $250. Paypal seller protection only valid if payment by paypal. I wouldn't accept anything else accept cash or postal money order.

The only way to make an economic system truly stable is to permit the free market to take over.

  • PayPal has nothing to do with this, yet. The guy informs me he will be paying by check and requests the item be mailed to an unverifiable address.

'Scuse me, but that ain't gonna work.

I sent the buyer an ebay message saying I do not accept checks, that I accept PayPal. In this case I would accept a USPS money order, please notify me ASAP about his choice, etc. I went on to mention that even though his address is on the ebay Order Details page, I asked him if he could correct his unverifiable address situation. I'm sure he thinks I'm being a pain, but I don't mean to be. Waiting on the buyer's reply...

how can you tell the address is a parking lot? did you do a google aerial map?

it could be a shopping mail with mail drop location

checks are risky- most banks charge you when the check does not clear, and could take a couple weeks before chargeback from your account

    postal money order good alternative
  • Raybob15239Raybob15239 Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭
Re accepting checks, the guy can file a forged check claim with the bank and the bank will do a charge back on your account. Happens more than folks realize. Great scam. They get their money back and the cost of chasing them down and suing is way too high. You can file a theft charge with the cops, but that's even iffy. Postal money order only, and don't cash it at the bank...take it to the post office to cash as there have been many problems with counterfiet postal money orders! Only after the USPS pays the USPOMO should you ship.

A few years ago I had a buyer do the exact same thing. So, I asked him the name of his
bank (thought maybe we had a branch here) and it was one I had not heard of before.

But, I did have a nephew in his state just a couple of towns away (bigger city). So, I had
him send the funds to my nephew who cashed the check at his bank. I sent the coin and
got a personal check from my cousin. Worked out well. Nephew and I have same last name.
If you would like to take advantage of something like this, why not. I sure you have forum
members in his area of CA that would be happy to help a friend.

Buyer might not go along with putting a different name on the check for this purpose but
then you are bending the rules for him and maybe he'd bend for you?

    Run away, do not walk.
  • It's so disappointing to see situations like this.

I'd bet good money that someone on these boards was also a bidder on this coin. I'm mighty sorry.

It's a fairly difficult coin in a popular series.
