1958 Pele Rekord Value???

Yes eBay sin as I am considering bidding on the BVG 6 listed right now. Problem is the opening bid is $250 with no bids yet and 1 day left.

Pele is not followed by VCP. No completed listings on eBay. No other active listings except a $799 BIN of the dual card.

I know the card is worth what I am willing to pay but I don't want to get hosed if I pay $250 when market value is much less.

I paid about $100 for my Cassius Clay 1962 Rekord PSA Auth so it is the only comparison I have.

Thoughts?

i'm not sure about the rekord card.. but the Heinerle, Alifabolaget and Quigol card sell for big bucks.. i don't remember the exact amount but over 250. I think if you were going to drop a lot money on one of his cards the Alifabolaget would be the best bet. IMO its the most traditional looking card and should be considered his rookie. i haven't seen one in my price range.. for now i just have the 64 panini.

Thanks. I really have been wanting the Alfiabolaget but that one seems even more difficult to find.

Magazine cut cards will always hold lower value that you may think, especially when these complete magazines start coming out of the woodwork, like other similar "cards" have before.
ie.1932 Sanella Babe Ruth cards sold for $1500-$2000 in 1990, sell for under $100 now because of the flood of the complete books from Germany.

Blog about the Pele magazine cut "card"

My question..... Why can you cut these Pele/Clay "cards" from the magazine and get them graded, but not the Sports Illustrated 1954 cards from that magazine??

Thanks very much for the link. Very interesting info.

I trust BVG but who really knows with these magazine cuts. Still not decided if I will bid on this item!

  • There seems to be glut on the 1958 Rekord cards. Once thought to be very rare, they have begun to appear in numbers on ebay. I would recommend caution.

PSA has made a feeble attempt to catalog PELE cards in their registry. It really is a a poor showing of 30 or 40 cards.

My own catalog lists 300 plus Pele cards world wide. (probably the most comprehensive in the hobby). I also have MasterLists for George Best, Stan Matthews and Bobby Charlton.

Although my MasterLists are not ready for publication, feel free to ask me one or two questions about soccer cards. I'll help if I can.

You can see my article on soccer cards in the recent SGC Magazine.

I was hoping you would chime in! So I guess my question is if the card sold at the opening bid of $250, would that be a fair market price?

I look forward to checking out your article.

What would be considered the rookie cards for: (hey I can pretend it's one question)
    Donovan
Beckham (my wife will love this one in the wall display)
    Maradona
    Howard
    Ronaldo

I would be skeptical on any Rekord cards at the present. (that includes PSA ones!)

The only Rekord cards I would bid on would be ones still attached to the magazine. A range of $100 to 200 is a fair price right now as they seem abundant.

While all of Pele's cards from the 1950s are highly sought after, the few that were produced in Brazil are the best investments (and harder to find). The other 1958 rookie card - Alfabolaget (misspelled by PSA in their feeble registry) - is one of the most eye appealing and desired IMO.

I'll get back to you on the other rookie cards as I do not have my daya base with me.

    cheers

    Thanks!

I am going to just watch this BVG card end and see if anyone buys it. Funny thing is I am exchanging messages with a guy that listed the Pele Alfabolaget card about a month ago. He wanted too much for a raw version with poor photos. Seller is in Sweeden and claims to have 3,000 cards from this set/series but only this one Pele. If we reach a deal this will definitely be one that I make sure I do eBay/PayPal by the book.

Many international sellers do not have scanners or quality photos to upload. It is problematic for American buyers accustom to sharp gradable pics.

If they accept paypal then it shouls cover you pretty well it its not legit. My article covers the demand vs. supply problem with soccer cards.

I wish you luck in obtaining the Alfabolaget card. It is a great addition to any card collection.

While Beeckham rookie cards are hardly scarce, his licensed autographed cards are like gold. The same is true for Cristiano Ronaldo and George Best (deceased).

If you want to speculate, here are my recommendations:

    - Carlos Tevez (Manchester City / Argentina)
    - Andy Carrol (England / Newcastle United)
    - Gareth Bale (Wales / Tottenham Hotspur)

    The solid best bets remain:

    - Pele
    - George Best
    - pre-war cigarette cards from South America are extremely rare
    - pre-war cards from Germany and Italy - especially World Cup players (1930-1938)

    Good luck
  • What would be considered the rookie cards for:

Donovan - this is a bit tricky ... it depends what you consider a "card". Donovan appeared in (German club) Bayer Leverkusen's team postcard set in 2000/2001 season. Subsequently, he was loaned to the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) and appeared in Sports Card Investors magazine cards in 2002. These are not licensed by MLS or US Soccer. The same year he was featured on 2002 Sports Illustrated for Kids - so take your pick as to which of these would be his official rookie card. IMO - the last one is probably the truest in terms of American standards, but the first is the actual debut on a soccer collectable.

Beckham - Beckham appears on several licensed cards for his debut:

1997 Upper Deck England "3 Lions set"
    1997 Merlin Premier League Gold
    1997 Futera Manchester United

anyone of the above could be considered his "rookie card".

BTW - Upper Deck MLS cards are a decade too late to be Beckham's rookie card. So many ebayers advertise any and all his MLS cards as "rookie". Any of the above listed cards are good investments in mint condition.

The number of cards in an initial registry when it's launched isn't a "feeble" effort by anyone except the collector. Chances are, IF there's a Pele set (I haven't bothered looking), that when it was requested, the registry only looked for a few cards beyond what was already graded. If people want a registry to grow, submit your cards....

    Cnote-

I beg to differ. If you look at the pages of PSA's master list for Pele cards, it is just several repeated copies of inaccurate information. Which means to me, that PSA did not do the proper research as they do with baseball or other cards.

I doubt if I submitted a Topps card of Babe Ruth listed as "Potts", they would just slab them for the money. If what you are saying is true, then I could, theoretically, submit 200 cards - licensed or not, genuine or not - just so it could be in the registry. That seems pretty silly and unprofessional from ANY grading service - much less from one that calls itself "professional".

Therefore, I know of only one grading company that researches and verifies its soccer cards (and it ain't PSA). I have helped them identify over 50 sets and series of previously unknown soccer cards. PSA has yet to correct one of their errors and continues to look amateurish when it comes to international collectors.

But that is just my opinion based on experience.

The Three Lions is the scarcest as it's numbered out of 5000. The Merlin's is harder to find than the non-Three Lions version of the Upper Deck rookie.
  • RedHart54 knows his footy cards !

Beckham also appears in the EPL annual Panini sticker set in 1997. But since the question was about "rookie cards" I did not list it.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, he appears on two sticker sets from Portugal that are his first collectables.

This is the 2002-03 Panini "rookie card".

Well I ended up buying the 1958 Rekord Pele for $160 plus shipping. eBay link for 1958 Pele

Card went unsold at $249 then $199 so I offered buyer $150 and he countered.

Might have paid too much and might be taking a chance but "a fool and his money" as they say. In all seriousness I have wanted this card for a while and isn't that what this hobby is all about?

you are absolutely right. Pursuit of the whale keeps us going. There are at least four other PELE rookie cards I know of ...

My Masterlist is coming along. I will be publishing the soccer card guide by summer. It should include rookie cards of at least 100 legendary players.

congrats on your PELE rookie !

does anyone know what the difference is between the 2 1964 panini pele cards. Their is COPPE and VALIDA. Is the valida a blank back? I just bought this card from someone who swears that it is original but the back is blank. Thanks for any info.
