For me, this coin has one of the most beautiful reverses

I was at a local table top show today and came across it. It doesn't fit into my collecting themes but I just had to buy it.

Italy 1917 2 lire

I agree. Definitely for a 20th century piece!

I'm in for that, I have a 1913 1 Lira for just the same reason.

Yes, that was a good period for Italian coin designs. Some of my all-time favorites are Italian from this period.

I'll need to get a one of those as well. The 1908-13 reverse is very similar however the horses appear more uniform and proud, on the 1914-17 reverses the horses look like they are struggling and putting up a bit more of a fight.

Just another argument for collecting World Coins and one that I so happen to agree with-

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

They made some of the most artful coins in that period, not just Italy, though they're probably on top.

But now you need to compliment that silver with some copper! image

Ah the story of my collections. But those 2 Lire look so purty when they are nice like that one, so surely there must be some thematic area that can be stretched for acceptance.

Spoon, that is a beautiful 10c - toning makes it more attractive than an all red IMO!

I love this design on the 1L and 2L from this era as well but see that the 1914 5L is crazy expensive these days. I like the 1911 5L as well.

I too enjoy this era when Italy minted some very beautiful coin designs across all denominations.
A pretty looking 2L lured me in to the series as well. And Spoon's 10C is absolutely superb.
I also like the Honey Bee design to the 10C when it was minted later as a smaller coin.

I would really like to venture into the 1 and 2 Lire coins myself. I do have some of the small bronze, need the 10 centisimi though and would love to have the 5 Lire from 1911.

The 10c and 20c are my favorites, followed by the 5c.

  • Look up "quadriga." It's a modernization of an ancient Roman coin design.
I have one of the ancients to go with my modern Italy set from this period.

Really enjoying seeing these. The amazing thing is that my family was spending these on a daily basis.

    Mine too, Billy! image

Here's another neat Italian from that period.. not as beautiful, but neat for the overstrike. These recycled the earlier 20c pieces that were minted in Berlin in the 1890s. They seem kind of marginalized by the more artistic designs and finding a nice one for sale with with such a clear image of the old type is tough. I sold this one to Dan a while ago and had to buy it back!

  • Mr Spoon,

That one is WAY cool! I thought die clash at first. But it's obvious the overstruck
    lettering is a different font.

It's hard to find that particular coin in nice condition. Often they are streaked
with copper (bad mixture?), or they don't have luster to match the details.
This one has it all! Thanks for sharing it.
