Please show us your FUN near misses!

OK, so we've had a chance to write our FUN reports and share our FUN NEWPs. In this thread, I'd like to see the coins you MISSED on. Coins in auction that you were an underbidder on, really wanted, but for one reason or another you missed out on.

I had two. One I was hoping to get, and another I had no chance. Both are large cents.

The first is a nice 46 in 65 RB. I was two bids below the winner:

Heritage Auction #1 - 1846 Large Cent

The next is more of a dream coin. A proof large cent. The one in question is an 1857 toned proof large cent I probably had no chance of winning (as my $5k bid indicated), but wanted to bid on anyway. It was even nicer in-hand:

Heritage Auction #2 - 1856 Proof Large Cent

So what coins did you NOT win at FUN?

  • I will say that when I look back at my bid history, I could of been in hot water with the wife.

Misses: Some just barely, some not even close. Many of these lots I bid on after my choice before it was lost.

    3578,3610,3631,3632,3645,3650,3656,3657

    10649,10673,10681,10704,10710,10726,10751,10773,10808

This was my first live auction and heritage live exposure. I was a little timid but also a little distracted with other things happening. Iwill say this it is not easy trying to bid on heritage live using your i-phone. Things move much to fast.

I actually did win 4 in the auctions, bought 2 on the floor, and one Tuesday, that is my best purchase from the FUN. I am glad I did not win more lots than I did. I would have had no money when the coin came up on Tuesday.

Lost this by two bids. Went higher than I wanted to go.

    1808 Bust Half

Also by two bids. Also went higher than I felt it was worth.

I was outbid on 47 items. Mostly proof Buffalo & Jefferson nickels, with a few various other coins in the mix.

    6 Proof Buffalo nickels
    37 Proof Jefferson nickels
    2 Kennedy half dollars

    1794 starred reverse cent
    1989 Congress half dollar

I would have bid higher on some of these, but something else came up.

I was out bid by one bid increment on a 1906-S Dime in PCGS 66+.
Also on a 1920 SLQ in PCGS 64 FH... it ended up selling my MS 65 $$

Not really a "FUN" near miss - but it was the right time period. We bid this 1872 seated dollar to well above our decided limit...
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!
