My guess is each coin was in a 2x2 which had piece of paper or cardboard covering the obverse (perhaps with a description on it or invoice), which was held in place by a rubber band.

I think so too. The odd thing is the rubber band was consistently on the edge of the coin, instead of near the middle.
Perhaps the owner had the coin in a funky holder and that position made sense. Lance.
