How to Spend $500?

What's up everyone? I've lurked here for a while but never really posted.

I have about $500 to spend on graded baseball cards.
I collect HOF black and Latino baseball players. With $500 to spend on graded cards, how would you spend it on 1970s and earlier HOF black and Latino players?

JMHO, but I would get a 1956 Topps Clemente and a 1956 Topps Mays, both in PSA 7. SMR is $365 for the Clemente and $310 for the Mays. Find a reputable dealer and negotiate.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Another alternative is 1957 Topps Mays PSA 7 = $275, !957 Topps Aaron = $265, and 1957 Topps Clemente PSA 7 $235. Find a reputable dealer and get two out of three. Get cards that are centered.

I would also go for one or two big cards, instead of watering it down over many cards. Happy hunting!

Or you can always invest in a fake mantle, those seems to sell for around 1500 on the bay.

You can't go wrong with HOF rookie cards so how about a 1951 Bowman #1 and a 1957 Topps #29.

1953 Topps #1 Jackie Robinson PSA 5 and any Clemente.
  • Agree with the other posters that you should focus your $$$ on 1 or 2 two really nice cards. There will always be high demand for Jackie Robinson, Clemente, Aaron, and Mays, so I would probably pick up 1-2 of them in the highest grade your budget will allow.
  • Thanks for the input everyone. It looks like most of you are basing your suggestions on what cards you think will ultimately hold the most value over time, right? I was originally saving money to get a Jackie Robinson Bowman RC in PSA 7. I figured if I slowly saved for a couple years, I could get one fairly painlessly. But now I'm getting impatient and questioning whether I can trust any PSA card that expensive from eBay, and whether my money would be better served getting a handful of other cards. Obviously Mays and Clemente are the two superstars of my little sub-genre, but you guys don't think there's anyone else whose value is just as solid?

    McCovey
    Stargell
    Campanella
    Paige
    Joe Morgan
    Lefty Gomez
    Banks
    Bob Gibson
    Marichal
    Luis Aparicio
    Hank Aaron
    Joe Morgan
    Frank Robinson

Being a Giants fan, I'm partial to Mays, Marichal, and McCovey, but honestly I'd be happy to have graded RC's of any of these guys.

if i had 500 to burn on a vintage post war rc to enjoy for many years. honestly i would go with the 55 clemente rc for many reasons.

the clemente rc is one of the iconic post war rcs and will always hold its value. if you ever got into a pinch you will get back your initial investment and possibly more if you ever had to sell. also the 55 topps set is the nicest and one of the most sought after sets post war (even though mantle is not in the set). the clemente is one of the 2 key rcs in the set.
