Premium for centering on 52 topps

Hi All,

Got another question relating to the 52 series. What sort of premium do you place upon cards that are dead centered? I mean, as I have searched for cards, I've seen well centered examples priced well above what the card might list for...like, there is a particular common High # which is valuated at around $150.00 in PSA 5, yet the seller wants $250.00. Now no doubt about it, it's a gorgeous card, perfectly centered, and better than 6s or 7s that I've seen, but is $100 over the list a bit much?

How much of a premium over book value do you sell (or buy) when it comes to a Topps '52 that is centered and just has simply great eye appeal?

Thanks!

BR

Hi, it depends, there is no set rate. One thing is certain, cards that are dead centered, have great color and gloss

will go for more than one that is oc and dull. If you are comfortable paying 100.00 more for it that's what matters.

If no one buys it from the guy at 250.00 sooner or later he may lower the price. Have you made an offer?

I'd offer 200.00 and see what he says. I would NOT tell him what it books for.

    Hope that helps.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • Thanks!

I agree, I won't tell him the book price, because he probably already knows it. It's a great card, and certainly worth more than the list price. Just not sure it's quite what he wants for it, so I made an offer and let's see what happens.

Fingers crossed that I shall soon own my first high number 52!

Hi Numbers are literally impossible to find, let alone centered. IMO A seller could ask whatever he wants for one, and the desperation of the buyer will determine the outcome

Very true, '52s overall are hard to find centered especially the high's. You have to pay extra for centering.

Is $150 VCP? If so...I would pay no more than $200.

Mickey VCP may be for average looking examples, the OP says this specific one is dead centered.

    throw away the book.

Brian, what I meant was don't get into a 'well it books for X' with the guy. You may alienate him.

    Good for you.
  • Well, to update you all, I worked out a deal with the seller which we both found acceptible.

I officially own my first high # '52!

No doubt, I paid a premium over the book price, but the card is a bullseye center, high number card. I'm no dealer, and this set I'm building is definitely long term, so I don't mind paying a bit more for the cards with eye appeal. I can wait for the value to catch up with the investment. image

Photos to follow once I receive it.

    Thanks for everyone's advice!

    Steve,
That's why I said to offer 33% more. That's a fairly significant percentage higher. But, yes, dead centered examples can command a steep increase over run of the mill ones.

The value is already here for that specific example.

At least IMO it is. You said 'book' was 150.00, I don't recall what book you were referring too.

Anyway, that example will always be valued higher than the 'book' The book is for average looking

    examples.

Glad you got your card at your price.

Please post when you get it!
  • WinPitcher,

By book I was referring to the preview version of the price guide on PSA's website...I'm buying 52 topps, but I'm too cheap to subscribe to the up-to-date listings...how's that for a contradiction?

So for all I know, the book value might be higher than what it was listed for in the preview version I was able to access. Ultimately though, I got the card (329 Delock) in PSA 5 and it's just gorgeous! Perfect left/right centering, and just a smidge off of perfect top and bottom...I'm a bit more forgiving on top to bottom versus left and right. One impacts the eye appeal far less than the other, I feel.

Will post scans as soon as available.

    Best,

    BR
