I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

When I was in high school back in the late 70's I was at the local coin store and the owner had just purchased a bunch of unopened 1953 through 1955 boxed proof sets. I collected pennies at the time and he let me open as many as I wished so that I could find the one with the nicest looking penny. I didn't care about the bigger more valuable stuff. I still have the both the 53 and 55 set today.
  • Very nice details - too bad about that tarnish.

What do I see at the bottom of the torch of the first dime?
Looks like something between pluribus and unum.

doh. thanks for assisting me in reading comprehension tonight. i read mint set as
proof set. I have no idea why that mint mark did not ring a bell right away.... Better
    lay off the sauce ;-)

if one side of two dimes is all there was then the set would probably have best been left sealed. that's what makes sealed Mint/Proof Sets a gamble; there are far more losers than winners. it's kind of like the sealed GSA furor that swept the forum/eBay several years ago. sellers were making a killing on sealed boxes when the probability was an 1883/1884-CC, yet the buyers were paying $400+ for them and there were no reports back of a nice score that i recall. in a strange way the only method to not take a bath was to leave the box sealed!!
  • More, please!
