a wacky question for you guys...Why isn't Rusty Staub in the '72 or '73 Topps Sets?

I've always wondered, but never have discovered why he was omitted.

Money issue?

He was omitted because Will Clark is not in the Hall of Fame...

Topps had a contractual dispute with the makers of Orange food dye in '71 and therefore no players with ORANGE hair were allowed in the set for two years.

Sorry, I have no idea why.

  • while i love the answers thus far, i believe it was a contract dispute

Maybe cuz Rusty is a grump who enjoys being anti social with fans, including having himself excluded from their baseball sets those years. Dont know why that guy is so angry and not fan friendly. Kinda like Pete Vuckovich.

With a name like Rusty and a nickname "Le Grande Orange," you'd think he'd be a bit more jovial a fellow, LOL..

Edit: Barry, I was wondering why you thought Rusty was ill-tempered? From all the recounts I've read from fans on the web, it seems he was actually very fan friendly..

There may have been a day he was fan friendly. Maybe when he was playing. But now, if you ask him to sign something it's like you just stuck a needle in his eye and gets all wacky about how much he hates to sign autographs....and thats if you can even get him to acknowledge you are there next to him.

Personally, I have never asked him to sign anything...this is just what I have seen a few times.
  • Rusty is definitely a grump.

Im sure he would be more pleasant if you just said "Hi" to him, .........instead of all you clowns pulling your pens out trying to exploit him for $$

FWIW, I used to be a big Rusty Staub fan back in the 80s and 90s. I really enjoyed watching him play especially when he was on the Expos for a couple years. Autograph seekers are part of the deal when you become a pro athlete or famous person in any realm. Not everyone who collects autographs are dicks. Yeah, there are many and make it bad for the rest. And like I said, I have never asked him for an autograph because I know how he is. It doesnt matter if you just say a pleasant "hi" to him, his attitude stays the same. Rusty Staub is a grump, plain and simple. If he was ever to do a signing, I would probably get a couple of autos then.

Since I never had any direct meetings with him, I don't know about his demeanor; but having been an autograph seeker in San Diego in the 1970s, I do remember Rusty being notoriously difficult to get an autograph from.

How the hell can you expect Rusty to sign when he has a knife in one hand and a fork in the other at all times?????
