It's for a fellow collector and I do not open my Sears very often. TIA.

Not quite my area, but it looks like a 2nd century BC bronze of Pella in Macedonia. Athena on the obverse and a bull on the reverse. It doesn't seem to be listed in my older Seaby book, but looks similar to 979 in Plant's Greek Coin Types and their Identification.

The text on the reverse reads "Pellis" in the Greek alphabet. So Pella sounds like the place.

ΠΕΛΛΗΣ, means of/from Pella. Thanks guys. Denomination? Or a more precise minting date? Condition and value if any?

  • 2nd Century BC (158-149 BC according to Sear?), looks like a fair bit of detail on the head, overall VF-, $20-30 retail maybe a bit more if it's attractive in hand.

A grade is an inadequate report of an inaccurate judgement by a biased and variable judge of the extent to which a coin corresponds to an undefinable level of an unattainable state of preservation. - Never tell me that grading is science.

My library is pretty limited on Greek coins and I didn't see this type in Sear, but I have an older set. VCoins has several of this type and a related type with Poseidon listed. Descriptions indicate BC 187-31 and do not provide any denomination - typical of many/most Greek AE in my limited experience - listing the coins as AE (size). Based on eye appeal of the photo, I'd guess F-VF, reverse nicer, obverse less so. Prices range from about $12 to 70 for the ones I looked at. It appears to be a fairly common minor bronze so, IMHO and unencumbered by any more specific knowledge, a $20-40 range would seem reasonable, depending how the coin looks in hand. The references cited with the VC coins may provide more info about specific time frames. Here's a few of the VCoin links...
