1964 Topps Tallboy Hockey Selling Advice

A co-worker has a really sharp complete set (I would say overall EX-MT, centering is a problem), but hockey cards are not my expertise. He is on the fence about selling, and I told him that I had no idea what it would fetch at auction (that's what I usually do with my own stuff - throw it up at $0.99 and let the market figure it out). I guessed anywhere from $3-6k, which is kind of a huge range. I did a rough guesstimate just by adding up all of the PSA 6 VCP values to get a ballpark, and that's around $6,500. Of course, these are all raw, so it wouldn't fetch that much.

So, I guess the questions are - if he decides to sell, should he get the keys graded? Would you tempt fate with an auction? Would you set a high BIN with BO? Some scans below...

Definitely grade, especially the Hull, Beliveau, and Sawchuck. These cards sell for a premium in high grade and every grade point helps. That should maximize the sale. These cards are very tough.
  • Thanks for the reply, Tomi. Here are a couple more of the key cards, some have serious centering issues, while some are really nice:

There's some tough SOBs right there. Cool cards, and grade all the key cards and the commons that are centered. Doug
  • FANTASTIC Cards, especially the unmarked Checklists

    Slab those for sure

  • definitely get the star cards & checklists graded and any commons that could pull a 7 or higher. best way would be to sell them all one by one at auction but time consuming, if selling as a whole set set the starting bid at the least you would take for the set.

Ebay is a big gamble especially with hockey cards if you want the maximum amount.
another route with a tough set of this quality would be get the stars graded and contact a major auction house. jmho image
