Why are people delusional? Or is it just how ebay has made it?

So I'm trying to buy some fairly priced cards (or what I thought to be fairly priced cards) on a different forum. I made an offer of about 30% of book on the cards (newer cards, so not so condition sensitive). The person proceeds to tell me that my offer is extremely low and he can list them on ebay and get 50% of book all day. I'm under the impression that the last 100 or so cards I've looked up on ebay sell for between 15-30% of book, in which you lose another 18% to ebay and paypal fees for cards under $50. So is it just me or has BIN's make it so people "know" they can get so much more for their cards - and then when the offer would be equivalent to a 50% on ebay offer they just don't understand the fees - or tend to ignore them?

Good luck to you and hang in there!

Edit* It was only about 5 cards
just like a card shop.. those cards sit in the case until the right buyer comes along.. if the card shop had an auction..
he would sell his cards but most likely at much lower prices
I know that this won't be popular but it is an undisputed fact in my life
If you did offer more then eBay....why not just go buy them on eBay.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Why would you offer 30% of book when you say they're available on Ebay for 15-30% of book?
If a dealer is willing to pay 100.00 for a card or a unopened box of cards.
What is a fair price for the dealer to sell this card or box for?
pays 100.00
sells for 150.00
or pays 100.00
sells for 105.00
these are just examples but what do you think is a fair price for the dealer to sell this item for? as I am with the OP that ebay has made people delusional.
But, if it's a card or box that is worth 100.00 wholesale I see NO problem
with a seller trying to get 150.00 for it.
Lets NOT fool ourselves here, anyone that sells on ebay wants max value for whatever item they are selling.
Anyone buying on ebay wants it as cheap as possible.
No one is delusional, not everyone values everything the same.
The trick is to get both sides into an agreement.
If the offer is too low, move on, if the item is priced too high, whine here about it.

<< <i>Of course it depends on the card or box.

Exactly.
Another factor to me is how long will you have to hold something
before making the sale. Using Diamondman's $100 buy for example:
if I pay $100 for an item, if I can flip it in one day or one week for $120-125, I flip it and move on to the next deal. If I have to hold that $100 item for several month's, I'm gonna want to make more $$ on it. Time is a large factor to me as a seller.
