When subbing, yes or no to penny sleeves?

When you submit, do you put the card in a penny sleeve before putting in the card saver? or do you just use the card saver and skip the penny sleeve?

Penny sleeves and card savers both. The one time I didn't, I had 3 cards in a sub that graded down due to lower corner issues that I swear weren't there when I reviewed before sending. Also, vintage sleeves only - I like a little extra room.

Penny sleeves are like boxers - you don't really have to wear them, but it makes ya feel better about chafing.

If you're submitting chrome or 80s era high gloss cards, it's a must. Otherwise, the Chrome cards are at risk for scratching/scuffing, and the high-gloss cards will occasionally glue themselves to the card saver (as well as scuff or scratch on the way out).

  • I did use them when I first started subbing; I've now stopped just because I'm lazy and have not seen any difference in terms of grades expected.

I never have and probably never will. I really like how the Card Saver I and II have kept the cards from moving. JMHO.

I used them for probably the first 300 Cards I submitted, then I swear they were dropping them in the Penny Sleeves, my grades have went up in my last 300 Card Submissions without using them.

Couldn't have said it better myself! lol

I use them for everything except the larger vintage (eg. 1952 Topps).

it is smart to use penny sleeve for the added protection. Snip off one corner at a 45 degree angle to insure you do not nick a corner on your card !

A penny sleeve (aside from perhaps the shiny stuff as mentioned) is just adding a way for the grading company to accidentally damage your cards. Penny sleeves suck when you put cards into them. There is a slight snag of bottom corners all the time. If you do use them, it is an absolute must to clip one of the upper corners. Total waste of time and money IMO.

It sounds to me like sevral of you are using the generic size sleeves. There is a vintage one that is about 1/4" wider that doesn't have that issue.

I've submitted over 10,000 cards for grading and have never used a penny sleeve except for a few modern shiny cards.

I'm thinking if you use the sleeves, it's just one more corner that can get dinged by whoever's handling the cards.
  • How do you sub over-sized cards, that don't fit into sleeves?
  • jswietonjswieton Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭
I use Ultra Pro Extra Thick card sleeves (130pt.) when subbing. They are wider than the standard penny sleeves which helps eliminate some of the risk of dinging a corner when putting the card into the penny sleeve.

Not only should you use penny sleeves every time, you should slit one of the sides on each penny sleeve so that the card slips in without risking any of the corners. The act of pulling cards in and out of card savers is infinitely safer and easier with a loose penny sleeve than without. PSA recommends them for good reason.
