Got my grades- That sound you didn't hear was me hitting the floor

Purchased some raw coins and sent them in. The 1852 $5 was one I had for a while, the other 5 were just purchased. They looked nice but I tried not to expect too much. I also crossed
two other nice coins at the same grade, and my Indian Cent slabbed in a secure plus holder. Sorry for the no pictures. To say the least, I am stunned.

Line # Item # Cert # PCGS No. CoinDate Denomination Variety Country Grade
1 1 7558 1861 G$1 US AU55
2 1 7941 1910 $2.50 US AU58
3 1 7951 1927 $2.50 US MS63
4 1 7952 1928 $2.50 US MS64
4 7952 1928 $2.50 US MS63
5 1 8250 1852 $5 US AU55

1799 $1 US VF20 Was NGC VF20
2 1 7228 1894 $1 US XF45 Was ANACS XF45

1877 1C US XF40RB Raw, Quarterly Special, twice bagged by PCGS and NGC as being cleaned, kept in library of coins album for one year, it never looked cleaned to me, third time is the charm, it looks great and has no hairlines.

I consider this a 9 for 9 submission, when does that ever happen.

  • To answer several of your questions- the one I am most happy about is a tie between the three 2 1/2's that went 63,63,64 for obvious reasons, and a complete surprise. However, the 1877 Indian cent that was twice bagged by PCGS and NGC was never cleaned in my opinion. I purchased it along with the entire set from a 75 YO man that remembered his father collecting them. Each one of the coins was in a small envelope with some information written on it in fountain pen. For example, one said acquired from colleague, Madison Wisconsin 1936. Here was an entire set of Indians (except the 1856) that was in little envelopes that was probably built from circulation. When I got them, several were very dull looking (from being in the envelopes) so I soaked them in olive oil which is an acceptable method as long as you do not rub the coins after washing them off. Maybe they saw a little something from the olive oil and it took a year to fade. As to the red/brown XF40 grade, that threw me, the holder says XF40 brown, but when you put in the number on the PCGS site it is listed as XF40 red brown- go figure.

Other notes- the 1799 Silver dollar is beautifully rim toned after being in a Wayde Redmond album for 50 years (another unbelievably cool collection). As soon as I can figure out how to do the picture thumbnail thing on the 15th, I will have that coin next to my name. Funny thing about that coin is I think that it actually looked better in the NGC holder (which I got in two months ago). I am a big PCGS guy and like the PCGS holders way better, except for this coin for whatever reason. I am keeping this one.

It is always nice to cross a key date- 1894 ANACS XF45 Morgan into a PCGS holder.

I also have 3 20-25% off center Buffalo nickels that look way mint state (like they were taken from a brand new roll in 1938 that are in scheduled for grading with the other grading company in Florida), can't wait to see how they turn out (they look brand new). My reason for not using PCGS is they want $50 for each error, too steep for me. Never talked to Broadstruck, but would love to send him pictures when I get these back, he would probably like to see them.

I will picture all of these when I can so this thread will be more interesting.

I have seen coins not grade when there was no issue, and I have seen horrible stuff get graded.

If I took every slabbed coin I owned and sent them all back to PCGS Raw I'd absolutely get some no grades.
