Winpitcher, with Howard, educating dopes who do not understand RBI in relation to RBI opportunities is not whining. Whining are the people who say they get that point, but continue to neglect it in their evalustions. Sound familiar??
Baseball,
For top 10-12 year peak, Ruth and Williams are probably the only players that beat Mantle. That is with giving Williams his due consideration because of lost time.
Usually when one watches a documentary about a player, or some sort of tribute to a player, it always makes said player look better than he truly was.
There are two documentaries that nailed the gravity of the players involved, one was the fairly recent Mickey Mantle, and the other is the recent Bird/Magic doc.
I didn't think it was possible to hear somebody understate Mantle's greatness in his prime...he was that good on the field and he really is an American Icon. When it is all said and done and we are all passed(and assuming America is still somewhat similar to what it is now) Mantle will endure as a greater American icon than Jordan.
Mantle is MOST associated with that whole time period in sports. It is the golden period for baseball...and it really is true that he is American as Apple Pie. It is a very romanticized time, and he is front and center in it.
Yes, Manlte was CLEARLY better than Mays or AAron in their primes(Mays is close though). It is NOT as clear with the case of Jordan/Bird/Magic in their primes.
To say Mantle was the Jordan of his time, is a compliment....to Jordan!
Keep in mind there is positional scarcity in WAR. So either way you want to contemplate Mantle, he's a top 10, or at worst top 12 all-time player. Easily could've been top 5, but you know...
Jordan has a HUGE advantage in winning the hearts and minds of folks like you because of the enormous advertising/HYPE age we are in, not to mention that his playing days happened 35 years more recent than Mantle.
oh yeah, well Mickey Mantle (Marble) was on The Flintstones...when it was in prime-time...when there were only 3 channels. To be quite honest, I don't know how anyone could possibly compare what a positional baseball player's impact on his team could be compared to a hockey or basketball player. Mantle could impact the game in 4 ABs, or what, maybe one or two defensive plays per game that weren't routine. Jordan dominated for over 80% of his games at both ends, and Gretzky carved the ice in at least 35-40% of his respective games.
I was watching MLB network last night and they were discussing Pujols's first 10 years. All i can say is WOW. His first 10 seasons are better than anyone whos played the game and that includes Ruth and Williams. They listed about 6-7 different stats. I dont remember them all.
I don't recall a post on this thread in which anybody did that??? A reading comprehension class or two might help.
Perhaps a refresher on page 3 will work out for you next time around. In your forthcoming sterling retort, be sure to employ an exorbitant amount of ????, and a handful of "really?"s and "seriously?"s so we'll know it's you.
nope I'm only bright enough to piggyback on other posters' work/research, and I only use stratospheric levels of passive aggression in my posts. I also only like to state my cases using a myriad of ???, reallys, and seriouslys so that I don't have to explain anything clearly. Megért?

Most home runs ...408...
Highest slugging % 624
<< <i>Like I said I won't argue against a man who hit a 634 foot home run. >>
There is much debate on that topic on how far it really went.

I just wish I had bought it when I could've - relatively - afforded it.
Now - I just won't spend that kind of money on it right now.
That's the extent of my debate on the issue.
