My understanding of Indian, and perhaps Chinese coins, is that whenever there was a change in government the new governor would order all the old coinage melted and new coins minted to reflect his taking of power. Seems this kiln was getting set for the big melt on the new party change. Wonder why it did not get done. Cast coinage was not as unusual as the article indicates. If I remember correctly the Romans were casting coins back a couple of centuries before this Chinese date. Would be fun to find a cache of coins for sure!

Well, I guess the price on Song Dynasty cash coins may have just dropped from $1.50-2.00 each on down to 25-35 cents each like the ubiquitous Ch'ien Lung pieces from the 1700s.

Probably all fused together in large clumps. The pic shows them to be heavily corroded.
