Unknown renaissance medal?

Can anyone please help me identify this medal. I haven't received it in hand yet and the reverse is supposed to be blank.
It looks like a renaissance type to me?

SMOOTH EDGE

MEASURES 29mm x 6.5mm

Yeah, does have sort of a renaissance look to it, but the name that leapt randomly into my brain when I saw it was, "Bonnie Prince Charlie".

Now, it may not look anything remotely like Bonnie Prince Charlie, but the lad does have a wee bit of a Scottish look about him, no?

    Thanks gents,

I have emailed Philip Attwood (Keeper of the British Museum’s Department of Coins and Medals.)

"Formerly Curator of Medals, Philip retains direct responsibility for the Museum’s unrivalled collection of around 70,000 medals, comprising commemorative and art medals from the Italian Renaissance to contemporary works...."

Hopefully if he has the time he may get back to me and I'll share any new information.

Not heard back from the museum yet but the medal arrived today.

It's very nice I took a couple of quick pictures of it.

If Patrick answers you back, would you please give me his email addy. I tried on at least two occasions to verify information on a Victoria medal and never got an answer from him. Dan

    Very neat looking piece.

I still say he looks like a Highland laddie.

I am not going to guess as to where it is from, but to me the style suggests mid to late 1800s.

I have had one response back so far which came from Baldwin's.

"Thank you for your email an the photos of your medal. I haven’t searched exhaustively for the exact piece (because it can be an extremely time-consuming task) but I am reminded of unattributed 16th century Italian medals of classical themes. It is also possible that the piece was designed for grand-tourers visiting Italy in the 18th century, in the same style. Either way it is a slightly later cast from the look of it but “Renaissance” is a perfectly reasonable title for it.

I’ll keep the medal in mind. In the meantime please find attached a bibliography which may be of use to you if you pursue an interest in renaissance (and related) medals.....

    Best wishes,
