Has Anyone bought from Martin Sports and KSA CARDS

Is there anyone out there who has dealt with Martin Sports on Ebay or in a private deal. He seems to sell alot of KSA cards and is probably from Canada

If you haven't dealt with him but can give me info on KSA that would be great.

People who have actually bought KSA cards to crossover what are the odds of a KSA 10 getting a PSA 9.......25%, 10%, 50%

Thanks for any help, Mike

  • when i hear that eBay users name, i automatically think "BGS Sheet Cut OPCs"

im going to guess that what they get that gets rejected by BGS, they send to KSA

    this is just my opinion

I believe they advertise in hockey trade magazines, i wouldn't waste your time trying to cross though, don't think dealers are leaving money on the table. KSA is a real grading company (they do shows and bring lots of equipment, spend time on the grades, and they really aren't cheap) but I wouldn't put them in the top tier of grading companies. It's more likely that KSA 10 = trimmed or recolored. What era of cards are we talking about?
  • Nothing highend. I just collect 1979 Topps hockey. Not worth recoloring or trimming. Right?

I've cracked 2 KSA cards and had them graded by PSA. Took a 2 grade hit on each one. YMMV

  • I've made many deals with Martin Sports Cards and they are very reputable in my experience. If you're looking to get a KSA 10 into a PSA slab that's probably not going to happen because it's most likely a sheet cut card. Ask them and they will tell you if it is, in fact, sheet cut.

As far as crossing KSA to BGS, that can be hit and miss, although I have crossed over KSA 10s to BGS 9.5s without even cracking them out before submitting. I never had the stomach to crack the card out of a KSA holder and worry about not getting it in a BGS slab so I can't comment on this.

No matter what anyone tells you though, overall, KSA is not as strict as BGS/PSA/SGC for hockey or otherwise. I've had enough of them in my hand to know. Personally, I have found centering (both front/reverse) and print defects to be the most overlooked issues on KSA 10 cards. Also, perhaps most importantly, just about every 1970-1990 hockey card you'll find in a KSA 10 holder is a sheet cut card. If this matters to you please be aware.

    Hi Mike,

KSA grading is wildly inconsistent. Part of the issue is that KSA has had different franchises over the last 5-10 years. Each of the franchises grades differently. In the last few years, the Ontario-based KSA has had the strongest reputation but there is no way to know which franchise graded a card. I have had a KSA 8 become a PSA 9, and have had many cards come back 2 grades lower, EOT, N6, or recolored. I don't buy KSA cards anymore. Just not worth it.

i bought a ksa 8 warren moon 83 jogo card. it crossed over to a psa 6. i was just happy it was authentic and crossed over. I wouldn't put much stock in KSA's grade.

I've dealt with Martin Sports dozens of times. They're great to deal with.

I havent re subbed any KSA graded cards, but I agree they aren't as strick as the big three.
  • about 10 years ago i bought a bunch of stuff from him, all opc baseball. Had no problems what so ever. In fact i had bought a 6 box 1991 opc bb from him, he forgot a box and sent it next day delivery. With ksa i find they tend to overgrade but are a solid company
Why do superheros only hang out in New York or L.A.? Why not Bangor??
  • Martin Sports is a reputable dealer, but also a known sheet cutter, everything he sells in a BGS slab is sheet cut !!!
  • KSA will generally set you back a couple of grades ie: KSA 7 = PSA 5 so on and so forth. There will always be certain exceptions to the general grade rule, but overall they will be 2 grades under PSA.

what jomer said. but, as others have also said, jason martin is a very good guy to deal with. ksa is all over the map with crossovers.....sometimes they are right on but usually knock one grade off (ie. ksa 8 = psa 7), and sometimes even two.

  • Thanks to everyone for all the info. Seems everyone has similar thoughts and experiences when it comes to Jason and KSA.

    Guerrero KSA 9

This card would pull a PSA 6, BGS 5.5

I crossed over KSA graded cards to PSA and it turned out to be a real bummer KSA cards are overly graded!!

what's also impressive is that KSA is still over grading cards and Martin Sports is still selling sheet cut OPC 12 years later

I didn't even notice. I do like when old threads get relevant updates. Somebody was using the search feature, kudos!
Jason Martin was the name of the guy whose ID was used to get into bars with my friends as a kid. Unfortunately he didn't have a connection for OPC sheets.
