1968 Topps Baseball-Card back question-different yellow color

I have two 1968 Topps baseball cards(#85 Gaylord Perry & #165 Tony Oliva) that have a different yellow colored back from the rest of my 68s' and wanted to ask if anyone knows why. Someone mentioned to me years ago that they may have been issued by Milton Bradley. Are they rare? I looked under the set registry and couldn't find the variation in any 1968 Topps Master sets, or any separate collections of Milton Bradley. lLease let me know if anyone has some insight to share. Thank You.

yes, the brighter colored backs are from the "win a card" game produced by milton bradley. don't know what the value is compared to the regular 68 topps cards but the Nolan Ryan card definitely sells for more than the topps card. John

  • John, Thanks for the info....do you know any more details, like how many cards were included in this game, or why PSA doesn't distinguish/recognize the difference??

There are 76 different baseball cards numbered between 7 and 195. These baseball cards have the 1968 Topps format. Also included in this set are 33 1967 Topps football cards, and 22 Hot Rod cards. This leaves 131 cards, and since the sheet is usually 132 cards, I have read that there is an instruction card. PSA has just recently started grading and labeling these cards differently. The first I've seen were on EBAY submitted by 4 sharp corners. Early in October, I bought a lot of 14 on EBAY they were listed as Topps Win-A-Card but were labeled only as 1968 Topps although the backs are different in color.

There is a checklist of the baseball cards in the SCD Standard Catalog. A full game boxed set sold for around $ 5 K in an auction a year or so ago I had not heard about the instruction card, or seen one so far

I'm not sure of the instruction card either, but I know there are 76 different baseball cards, 33 football cards, 22 hot rod cards for a total of 131. From reading I believe the last card on the sheet might be an instruction card.

A poster on 54 said that when the entire game set was up for auction by Heritage they did mention an instruction card in the auction description

  • Thanks board members for your posts/replies and useful information. Are these Milton Bradley cards rarer than actual 1968 Topps? I am considering grading them because they are atleast NM if not NMMT......Thank You.....

Much scarcer. But lack of demand/knowledge may hold down prices
